Exchange or Sky? . . . that is the question

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6432 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.0 db 26.0 db
Noise Margin 5.0 db 21.0 db

From reading the forum recently, I don't think I'm alone in my situation with Sky Connect. After initial cut-out problems, my connection has settled down to average out at the above figures. Sometimes my downstream speed can be just over 7000 kbps (mornings) and sometimes just under 6000 kbps (evenings).
The only other variables are the noise margins which may go + or - 1db.
My problem is that when I try and download anything, the speed could start as high as over 2mbps and then drop down to 500-600 or start around 200 and drop as low as 25!
I recently contacted Sky and after about five days got a call back from a guy who said I should adjust the MTU from 1500 to 1458 or lower. I've tried this with little improvement, I'm still getting the fluctuating figures.
I'm beginning to think the trouble lies with my exchange which is currently showing red for congestion status with a date for upgrading of October 28!
Is it possible to find out more information from BT about this and from who?
      Any comments would be appreciated.

your connection speed is normal for your noise margin.
where are you downloading from, and if possible try a fast mirror with a large sized file.
you may be able to sync slightly higher if you try the master socket, but i think thats about as much as your going to get juding by your attenuation.

If you go to www.nildram.net, support, and then click on exchange checker and key in your telephone number. As to the master socket, I haven't got one.
