      Unstable connection for gaming

I have been having issues with my internet connection for a while and the problem has slowly gotten worse. I have talked to sky and they refuse to listen to me saying my connection is fine and that packet loss is something they don't deal with. This is affecting the service greatly and I came here looking for advice on how I should proceed in regards to fixing the problem.

      Here are my router stats:
      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8705 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 23.5 dB
Noise Margin 5.6 dB 15.15 dB

I have included two screenshots from pingplotter displaying my problem when gaming.

Also here is link to my bqm graph:

All help/advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

For some reason my screenshots were downscaled so I have uploaded them to imgur so you can more clearly see what is going on.

It's not just you. Maybe he has an unstable connection for browsing too.

      Re: Unstable connection for gaming

It seems my post has to go through moderation. It's taking longer than I'd hoped so I will summarise my initial post. This time without attachments!

I have been having issues with my connection for a while involving high pings that fluxuate a lot and also throughout the day. This naturally makes gaming very hard and also affects my ability to watch streams. I have contacted sky many times regarding this issue. They sent round BTO engineer who ran some tests and said the line was acceptable and he replaced my faceplate with a new openreach one. This got rid of my intermittent connection where my connection was dropping every few minutes but I am still getting packet loss and bad pings. I called sky about this a few more times and they say as long as I can browse the net that is all that matters and that they don't care about pings/packet loss.

So here I am hoping to gain some wisdom from someone as to what is actually causing my issue how I should proceed to getting it resolved.

Good shout Gymno, I never thought of that. It just seemed odd when I tried to read it.

I normally access the forum through the Tapatalk app on my iPad and sometimes it glitches and there is no content within a thread so a reboot off the app would normally fix this but when I tried it this time and nothing happened I thought it was a little strange.

Although the norm for a 38.5db attenuation line would be around 10Mbps at 6db target noise margin, your downstream sync speed is within 'acceptable range' at 8.7Mbps.

Unfortunately that's the only good news that i can see there, as the upstream is low with a corresponding high margin.
And even worse is the latency.
Baseline pings approaching 50ms with that amount of blue on the bqm graph is very poor.

How are you set-up up at home?
Router direct to master socket or on an extension?
      Microfilters installed on all/any extensions?
Any noise or hissing on the phone?

I have already removed the faceplate and connected the microfilter to the test socket.

      Microfilters installed on all/any extensions?
I only have one phone socket in my house as it is fairly old, so yes.

Any noise or hissing on the phone?
The phone line seems fine as I get a constant dial tone.

I have tried switching up all the equipment/wiring internally but that is having no effect so that leads me to believe the issue is external. Perhaps old wiring? Not sure though that is why I am looking for help in diagnosing my problem so I can present sky with a more compelling argument.

      Re: Unstable connection for gaming

In 99.9% of cases, if an issue persists when connected to the test socket it means the fault is external & therefore your isp's responsibility to rectify free of charge.

Which is where it gets tricky with your 'ok' downstream sync.

I would suggest that's more the opinion of the person you spoke to at the time, rather than skys policy LOL.

There's obviously something wrong & you need to press sky on the matter.
Personally, the only advice i can give would be to speak to them using real-world examples such as stream buffering & gaming nightmares, at least initially.

Have sky not performed any line tests?
Usually it's a requirement before a bto engineer can be sent out.
