      Connection Dropping

I have had Sky Broadband since mid August, I am not impressed with it at all. I tried to phone them once, spent almost an hour on the phone to some guy in India who told me to move my water cooler ... WTF! I have had other things going on, so not had much of a chance to do anything about it since.

      My main gripes are:

      1. The speed, I was told I would get over 15meg for the Max package, indeed the Windows XP Internet connection status and the router status page do say 15.3 meg, but the speed of even just general browsing is poor, way worse than the 2meg I had with Tiscali over a wireless network.

      2. My connection drops all the time, seems to be if I've not used it for 5 minutes or so, it just drops and I need to reboot the router to get it back. I've found a solution by leaving a torrent client running the background which ensures constant activity, but this is not ideal.

Both these issues happen both via wireless and connected via cable to router. I had no problems like this using a BT Wireless router, the same laptop & wireless adaptor, and my Tiscali 2meg Broadband.

Has anyone had similar problems, anyone know of fixes or do I need to phone the dreaded call centre again.

16Meg for 10 month, seemed too good to be true at the time, certainly appears that way now.

I've had very similar problems with connection dropping. With my first router the connection wouldn't stay up for more than a few seconds. With a replacment it would stay up for up to 10 minutes at a time.

I went through everything suggested on here - turning off the ping the uNuP (?), router re-boots etc. Also tried the whole set up in the test socket of the phone line. None of which made any difference.

Finally Tier 3 have capped me at 128k which at least gives me longer (sometimes up to a few hours between connection drops) while they send someone into the exchange - they think there's an issue with the "card ?" that was installed / and or some other mismatch between my subscription and what they've actually installed at the exchange (I'm on mid but one possible suggestion they gave was that they installed the kit for max thinking I was so close to the exchange that's what I'd want). They tell me that the connection was unstable even capped at 2mb - which was what I had perfectly satisfactorily from BT for the last year or so.

I'm on day 10 of a supposed 10 day period that it can take to gain access - so assuming they're not lying to me I may get a solution this week.

If this does finally solve it I'll try and find out what it is they actually did and post it.

Unfortunately if it turns out to be the same problem you'll have a few weeks of waiting for Tier 3 callbacks, waits to get into the exchange etc. I'm currently 6 weeks into the process.

@MrAngry, What are your line stats? Attenuation?

It must be around 70.00+db for them to cap you at 128kbps?

for 14-15db Attenuation, You should be getting the full 16Mb?

It may be that your Noise Margin is too low! Post your stats later for futher investigation!

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.0 db 11.6 db
Noise Margin 13.9 db 12.5 db

Thats my stats, I've turned off the upnp & done a software reboot. I have noticed a bit of improvement in web browsing, not as much as I would expect though.

Gonna leave the connection, go have my dinner & see if it drops. Then I will look at the master socket section.

      Are these figures glaringly horrendous?
