      Thinking of joining (Connect Package)

      Hi guys,

My plusnet account is beginning to annoy me, so i was thinking of joining sky on their connect package as easynet are not down at the exchnage. Plus at 17 for 40GB instead of 15 for 4GB it seems a better deal.

So here are a couple of questions for you guys...

      1) Whats it like (Connect package)? Do they do any crazy traffic shaping like pluscrap?

      2) Once my exchange does get llu'd what would happen to me?

      3) If i sign up to the connect package, do i get signed up to another 12 months of sky digital?

      4) I will be migrating in from plusnet (and i havnt been llu'd with them) so will i still be charged the activation fee?

      5) How long does this band code work for and what is it in aid of??

      6) Whats the average lead time on getting setup?

      7) Got anything more to add?
      thanks all

Personally I would avoid sky broadband, It is cheap and it is fast (at times) so far I have had trouble with torrents, but downloading latest version of azereus and enabling encryption works, for me the problem is cut outs, cut outs and more cut outs, when it works its solid as a rock, the problem is i get near 5 cut outs a day and sometimes they are serious ones.

      To answer your questions..

      1. As Christopher said, sometimes it is really fast and other times a bit on the slow side. But I am fairly happy with it overall.

      2. You should be upgraded to the Mid or Max package.

      3. No but you have to be a Sky Digital subscriber

      4. Yes, you pay this when your order Sky Broadband over the phone.

      5. I think it is something like 28 days.

      6. It various, I waited weeks to be signed up and others have done it much quicker.

      7. Nothing that I can think off !

Hmm, so you still have to pay an activation fee when you are already on the BT network. Odd.

Oh and is there any traffic shapping?

It was way that Sky controlled the amounts of signups, however rumour has it, it has been disbanded (sorry for the pun)

Personnally - go for it, Sky are a far better ISP and service could ever offer, even though there is teething problems. Some people get messed around, some people get it done right first time. Something Plusnet are guilty of as well.

BT charge all ISP's to migrate users on a BT Network (Ipstream etc) tho its around the 15 mark, if an ISP wants to charge the end user any amount it is entirely up to them. I took the view that I would be saving 8 a month over my last ISP, 5 months in and I start to save money over sticking to my old ISP after paying for the migration.

I personaly think Sky traffic shape Port 119(Usenet) on Connect but have got around this by using Port 80 on my newreader, I dont use P2P so cannot comment. Other than that speeds are comparable to every other ISP I have used, which is 4. Sky are no better or worse than any other ISP I have had used. if you view ADSLguide forums Sky have as many horror stories as every other ISP on there and quite rightly those that have a grievence vent there anger and frustration. My migration went thru with no problems, I have a couple of dropped connections exactly the same as all my other ISP's
I have sold my sold soul and joined SkyBroadband

Okay, well, its a bit of a shame but my cost of BB would go up by 2 but i would have no more traffic shaping and a lot and i mean a lot more usage.

I have a couple more questions...

      1) Do sky provide any usage monitor, or in fact do they have a members area where you can see and adjust information about your account, see how much usage you have nailed and purhapes even a members forum for tech support?

      2) If i do decide to sign up, how are payments taken? Can you set up a direct debit or does it have to be done via card. Oh and is the payment taken with then normal sky subs or are they two seperate payments?

      Thanks all

      1) no im affraid there is no monitor that Sky provide

      2) payments are either credit card or direct debit on top of your normal Sky payment so only one payment

      hope that helps
