Unhappy Broadband Max? What is the maximum of nothing at all?

      Hi all,

I've had my Sky Broadband Max connection up for about three weeks now and so far on my "super fast" broadband I have yet to complete a downloaded email or see a full home page from the simplest website. The router says that I am getting around 3MB but the connection is pretty much unusable. I originally had a 2MB BT connection on the same line through the same socket etc. That worked perfectly for two years. What has gone wrong?

I've worked through as much of the info on this excellent forum (gone through the master socket, tweaked the settings etc.) and still I can't get anything at all from the connection. The Sky tech support have bounced me back and forwards usually freaking out at the mention of a Mac instead of a PC. The traditional technique is to tell me that a Mac specialist will get back to me the same day. I never hear anything more. I get the same problem with 3 Macs, 2 different PCs and an Xbox 360.

I've been trying to make sense of the stats that I am seeing on the router but I'm uncertain what relevance they all have. Could some one give me an idea of whether these stats shed any light on my non-existent broadband or if the problem lies somewhere else.

      Here are the readings:

      Connection speed: 3710KB Down / 764KB up
      Attenuation: 42DB down / 25db up
      Noise margin: 6.8db down / 12.5db up
      1.4 miles from exchange

Thanks for any help or advice that can be given.

Have you got a firewall installe don your PC? If so try disabling it and running a test again, to me with those stats, you should be ok ....ish

      Firewall disabled

      Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I have disabled all firewalls on both the PCs and the Macs with no discernible gain in speed.

So you reckon those stats are OK? Surely I should be able to (theoretically) get a lot better than that? I guess, at the moment, that just having any kind of connection would be a good start.

      Cheers

You realy are at about the max speeds for your connection as 6.8db is okish but any lower with an increase in speed will bring will make it worse.

you in the master socket? using an extension? changed microfilter? wireless?

need more info to try establish the reason cheers
