      Really Slow and Unpredictable Connection. Help Please

      Hello

      I finally got connected to Sky MAX and I have not been having a good time. On the phone I was told my line should connect at 10-13 Mbps. It doesn't. It connects at about 6000 kbps, which wouldn't be so bad if I got near that. In reality, and using a number of different speed test tools I am barely clocking 400kbps. Very rarely I have gotten 4000+kbps but only once or twice. Pages hang and I often have to restart router.

      Have spoken to tier 1 tech support, who seemed baffled. Someone called from a higher tier yesterday, again seemed to know less than enough. Waiting for someone else to contact me.

      Hope someone here can help...

      FYI I am plugged directly into master socket at the moment stats are;
      Downstream 6095kbps Line Attenuation 43.0db Noise Margin 7.0db

      I also have an older Netgear router that I would love to try to see if it is hardware fault but have no idea how to find my details to copy over from Sky router. Asked Sky about this, they said there was no way, but from reading other posts it does seem possible.

      Any help very much appreciated.

      What's the uplink speed/stats? 7 dB is pushing things.

      Also, could you try the speed test site at
      http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/
      (no connection to me, just gives accurate results) and maybe post the results here? It could be your distance to the exchange limits you to around 6 Mb/s in which case they ought to downgrade you to the 'Mid' package.

      That speed test hasnt produced accurate results for me, But that maybe just me!

      You could also try downloading a large 100mb+ file from a FTP Server and then recording the speed?

      It may just be your line, Which isnt producing fast speeds, See if this is constant, e.g Test in the Morning 5am and again 5pm and again 10pm ?

      Just to make sure it isnt server congestion?

      thanks for that.

      tested on the site you recommended. pretty consistent with what i've been getting elsewhere;

      download speed 631 kilobit/sec
      upload speed: 646 kilobit/sec

      http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/Sho...?ID=52,438,855

      upstream noise margin 12.5db.

      router showing connection of 6095 kbps.

      I'm getting about 10% of that

      gutted
