Not sure what it stands for either (if anything) but yes, it's BTO's name for their fault escalation process. Or rather, being pedantic, it is actually called e-viper, presumably because it is an "e" process not paper.

Hopefully not the latter. The contractors are barred from a lot of work, including going into exchanges and have very little in the way of test equipment or training beyond the basics.

Angry Re: D/S link dropping but U/S staying up

The e-VIPER (to give it the correct terminology) call took place on Monday and the BTO chap switched the E side pair. All was well for about 9 hours and then the d/s went back to it's usual "status-erraticus" of dropping the link. This has continued all day and now I have the added bonus of the voice line dropping out as well - 4 times so far today.

Alan in Sky Level 3 support who, giving credit where it is due, has been exemplary, can see noise 'storms' occurring on my line which coincide with the d/s dropouts and the voice line drops. The thoughts are that it is either an intermittent copper fault or REIN. There are 8 crimps between my master socket and the local 100pair trunk, and an additional 3 to the local wiring cabinet - what's the odds that something somewhere has either degraded or else is intermittently shorting out.

BTO Engineer No 6 is booked for tomorrow morning and if this fails to produce a permanent fix then a joint Sky / BTO visit is being mooted.

I am fairly sure that going to VM will sort the problem (no BT copper) but even though my road is VM ready, I'm only paying Sky 12.50 for phone line, anytime calls, (intermittent) broadband and the full Sky TV package (exc movies & sport) and to get just the same voice and BB from VM will be over 39 (once the initial 6 month promo expires) - so that's not going to happen!

More news as it happens folks - stay tuned for the next thrilling episode!

To quote a "youf" phrase - OMFG! I have a feeling that mine is going to come down to a similar resolution. I have already had one engineer report water ingress to the crimps and you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to come to the conclusion that if water can get into one inspection pit then it is likely to have got into one of the other 10 between my socket and the local cabinet 500m away (8 of which are in the 100m between my home and the 100 pair trunk). Of course it could be REIN but as it is mainly the d/s BB which drops out (which for my ADSL2+ circuit operates at 2MHz and ^) then the skin effect will be in operation and if the exterior of the conductor is corroded, well..... Maybe I'm looking too deep / technical but it makes sense to my engineer mind (Thank you Kings College for the BSc in Electronic Engineering)

Re: D/S link dropping but U/S staying up

BTO engineer came back this morning, the same chap who changed part of the D-side link last week. Today he changed the remainder of the D-side link. The connection stayed up and worked perfectly for all of 44 minutes, then the d/s link dropped , then again and again (total 3 d/s dropouts in 50 minutes).

He was in and out in just over the hour and although he may have swapped me onto another pair (of indeterminate quality) what he didn't do was to inspect all the cable joints / crimps between my home and the local wiring cabinet, which I think is a major error as it was in one of the crimp inspection pits that water was discovered.....

Back to Sky CST.... who are contacting Level 3. I guess the next step is a CoOp visit with a Sky engineer and a BTO one. Hopefully this time they will examine EVERY cable joint between here and the Exchange / local cabinet (PCP?) and, finally, solve this infuriating <removed> problem - but I'm not holding my breath!

Credit where it is due, the Sky CST staff are exceptionally good - I started out ranting and raving (I know, not a good idea) and they just calmed me down - it must be the Northern Ireland accent!
