It's an old Post Office branded Netgear DG834GSP, that model is apparently ISP locked so I wasn't expecting it to work. I did have the settings as you mentioned and entered the Sky login details that I extracted from my Sky router.

So I've had router stats running all night and day, and there are few spikes, especially this morning when it disconnected for 58 mins! I put the figures into a spreadsheet to create a chart. Time period is about 20 hours:

Here's a screengrab I got as well of a brief dropout, not enough to make it disconnect though:

That's a bit strange. From the RSL chart it looks like your noise margin was at zero from 1.37pm to 6.12pm. I have never seen RSL reporting like this so it may be a bug. What does it say on the Connection Speed tab for this period.

looking at the graph..13.06 and 18.15 ish... look similar in drops/spikes..suggesting something is switched on and off then... maybe central heating?.. noise causes are in all shapes and forms....that wont cut you off..but try too look for a pattern...
      have a look here...

iv'e had that.. for some reason.. RSL never reconnected with the router untill i manually hit the start tab.... mysteries of computing i think.

That is to be expected. If it stops running for any reason it has to be restarted, but the OP did not say RSL was turned off at any time.

Re: Noisy Phone line (broadband dropping out)

During the outage this morning it just recorded Noise Margin (dB)= , Connection Speed (Kbps)=
No figures, I presume as it lost sync. It had a major wobble on this evening:

Here's a recording of the noise on the line I made through my mobile's voice mail as well. (I kept saying test to keep the voicemail recording!).

Re: Noisy Phone line (broadband dropping out)

I've had the same problem for the last two weeks. Solid 9Mb downstream line and then random drops started with SNR varying between 4 and 14 dB. Openreach came and line checked fine (SNR 7db) while they were here and after they'd re-terminated connections at the DP and cabinet. I'd done all the checks, tried two routers used test socket for over a week, new filters etc. but still dropped after Openreach visit with varying SNR and speeds. Sky said there was still a problem and rebooked OR.

In the meantime I downloaded RSL and ran it on a separate Windows laptop (I use a MAC or iPad normally) and set the RSL log running. Easy to see the huge variations in SNR and speeds BUT only when I started to use the MAC. A check with an am radio tuned to 616Khz revealed a load of interference that increased significantly when the MAC was in use. It's turned out to be a faulty power supply on a Belkin USB hub plugged into the MAC - so REIN. Presumably the MAC was reradiating the noise once it was powered up with enough power to affect the router. So worth a REIN check as they say!

Good find! Note that a BT80B RF3 or a new Mk2 vDSL faceplate has filters to combat external noise (REIN).
