      Question Random connection issues

      Firstly, hello
Secondly, I have a problem which is driving me a bit mad.
My broadband connection is stable. It's solid. No errors are registered on my router (Billion 7800N) and it only gets dropped when Sky do some sort of restart every few weeks or so. I'm on a short line, so have low noise and good attenuation.
However, a couple of months ago I started getting connection issues whilst using the internet. It's happening to all my devices - my PC (wired) will pause downloading webpages, itunes will have problems downloading podcasts, uploads will fail, etc. My phone will have random connection issues - Facebook will moan about having no conenction, and Youtube and the Play store will also fail randomly.
I've been running a Thinkbroadband ping test on my line for a few weeks, and all seems normal apart from a small amount of packet loss at random times. There seems to be no pattern to it - it's random day and night.
I swear I'm missing something, but can't think what!
      Any ideas?
      (and thanks in advance!)

      Re: Random connection issues

If anyone is interested it was the MTU in the end.
It was set to 1492. Upping this to 1500 stopped the random drops.

      Re: Random connection issues

Well done. For some reason the Sky routers are all set to 1500, whereas most other ISPs use figures such as 1492, so an easy mistake.

I did find another figure worked quite well on my setup. I put it back to 1500 the other day and didn't write it down. I could restore a file to get it back again, but from memory it was around 1470.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: Random connection issues

Its a bit strange that a lower than required MTU should cause such a problem. Higher than the maximum (1500) I could understand, but not lower.

I was thinking exactly the same thing...

Then remembered that when testing different mtu values, anything lower than 1500 would cause my browsers' backpage function to stop working, or rather i'd need to press several times for it to work.
Another consequence was with speedtest sites.
All of a sudden i had to wait up to a minute or more after the download test completed, before the upload test would start.
I quickly went back to 1500.

OK, so not really a proper test as that was using a ps3 with its own peculiarities, but was definitely down to the mtu setting nonetheless.
