North Wales Phone and BB out... Again!

      Hi,
Anyone got any idea what's up with Sky Phone and BB in North Wales? Seems as though the whole NW coast is out Service Status

It appears to be only Sky equipment affected, I'm on the Old Colwyn exchange and Talk Talk LLU and regular BT services work fine. In fact I'm using my neighbour's TT wireless connection to post this (with his permission). This is getting to be a regular event these days with 3 outages in as many weeks and more in the recent past. This is the longest to date, It's been over 24 hours and still no sign of a resolution.

I'm well aware of the flooding, but how do you account for the fact that it's only Sky equipment that's affected? And the fact it's been doing this for weeks with no flooding?

Sounds like it is a BT/Open reach issue and sounds quite major!

Re: North Wales Phone and BB out... Again!

I have got to admit these new fibre networks don't to seem to be very bullet proof! Damage to one cable seems to be able to take out a whole string of towns! which all seem to be daisy changed together. They don't seem to have any easy way of re routing network traffic.
We lost Sky, TalkTalk and O2 a couple of years back in Dunstable when workmen putting new street lights in about 5 miles out of town went through a fibre cable, we were off line for about 3 days. Then we lost it for 3 days again about a month later when pikeys ripped out the same cable a bit further along thinking it was copper!! The problems effected Dunstable/Luton/Hitchin/Letchworth so the exchanges are obviously all daisy chained together. Strangely BT and Virgin services in the area were not effected at all.

Re: North Wales Phone and BB out... Again!

Exchanges are linked with fibre. Many mobile phone masts also use fibre for their backhaul. Companies use fibre for their telecommunication systems now as well. Where I work, we have just had a fibre line installed to replace the old incoming telephone/data lines.

Dark fibre can actually be found all across the UK, even where there is no fibre broadband presence. Both BT and Virgin Media have a extensive national dark fibre network running all across the UK and so if this get's cut of any reason, it can take a lot out.

      • Update 6th December, 23:00pm

        • Update 6th December, 14:30pm

We understand that some customers in the north of Wales are currently without their Sky Broadband and Talk service. This is due to fibre damage caused by the inclement weather in the region. Engineers cannot currently access the fibre to carry out repairs due to flooding. We are working with Openreach to investigate the possibility of setting up fibre on an alternative route to restore service to affected customers.
We will post updates as they become available. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to have service restored as soon as possible.

Re: North Wales Phone and BB out... Again!

What you are describing Koala5 is correct.

One exchange will be the main one. Other smaller exchanges will then feed their traffic through the 'parent' exchange.

As for why some providers are affected and others are not, this will be down to which physical cable carries their traffic.

Each provider will have contracts with different firms and the cable s may or may not share conduits back to the main hubs.

It takes a little time to repair a single fibre cable, but when a host of cables have been damaged I guess that things will be a lot more complex.

Re: North Wales Phone and BB out... Again!

You would think they would connect the exchanges in a grid fashion like the power company's do, so that if there is fault in one link between towns power or data can be routed a different way round, maybe it too costly to do it that way.
But if there was a fire or flood in one of these major exchange hubs it could mean that thousands/millions of users could be off line for days if not weeks! As you say it doesn't just effect broadband now, potentially a major problem could take out all communications including landlines and mobile masts. A terrorists dream I should imagine.
