      higher attenuation getting better speeds?

OK so my friend got Sky broadband and these are his stats

      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15359 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 dB 18.6 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 12.12 dB

      And these are my stats.

      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14207 kbps 1023 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 dB 14.9 dB
Noise Margin 7.0 dB 15.15 dB

Even on a 3dB margin I sync at 15400kbps, so how come he is getting better speeds than me even though he had a higher attenuation? We are both on the same exchange and only a few streets apart. I've asked for DLM to be run on my line several times but it always maxes out at 15400kbps. Is there a specific script I could say to them to up my speed? Or even start off at the default 4096kbps/678kbps or whatever it is because I'm sure my line can do better. I've seen people with 16000kbps on a 32db line on a 6dB margin and its frustrating me as I like my numbers!

      Any help would be appreciated.

His line may be better than yours, even if it is longer. Although you have a noise margin of 7db, which looks like a manual setting, if DLM has set this, it could be your line is suffering from noise spikes. If the noise spikes are 3-4 db the line will require a hig noise margin to stay stable. Download and run Routerstats Lite continuously for a few days to see how the noise margin is behaving.

Re: higher attenuation getting better speeds?

I have been on a 3dB noise margin since February, it was set to 7dB yester to stop DLM as it had frozen, saying it had been running for 30 days. Have rung up Sky and they've finally said they'd bump it to the maximum my line can take, which is apparently 16.7Mbps. I have never seen that figure before so obviously DLM had been doing something wrong.
