      Broadband mis-sold

I have recently taken out a full package with sky (TV,Broadband and Phone),before signing up i used their "chat" feature to talk to an advisor,i explicably asked if they (sky) blocked access to thepiratebay.se, they said "no we dont block any torrent sites as standard",i have now found out (and possibly my own fault for not checking myself) that they DO block access to it and have done since may 2012,do i have a claim for mis sold Broadband because i specifically asked about thepiratebay and they lied to me to get the sale ?,i understand that copyright infringement is serious but i am downloading things that are not available in the UK to buy

      Re: Broadband mis-sold

downloading from that site or other torrent sites soon to be blocked is by uk isp rulings illegal and wrong be very carefully you are not reported for copyright infringment in any case. sky could black list your home phone number and possibly your postcode leading to you and your Neighbours (on the same postcode) being blocked from accessing any sky related products or services in the future. and then you will be blamed and held accountable.

      Re: Broadband mis-sold

It's just the major ISPs who were served the court orders to block it. Rather futile IMO as there are still hundreds of other torrent search engines out there (as well as proxies for the popular ones). Cut one head off and two grow back...

In reply to your question, if you can prove you have been lied to, you will probably be able to get out of your contract.

TPB has been banned by all the large ISPs, not just Sky, but by all the large ISPs in the USA and the EU. Whether what you are downloading is not available in this country or not, the fact remains that they are pointing the way to copyright material and in doing so, are flouting the Law.

Let's be honest here, is there anything on TPB which is not copyright? Apart from porn adverts that is.

      Re: Broadband mis-sold

There is some limited content which has been made available through TPB which is copyright free or has been specifically released on the site by the copyright owners for free distribution.

However well over 99.99% of the content is copyrighted and as such is technically not legal for downloading .

The court order was sent to the largest four providers in the hope of preventing it from being accessed.

If as Tom has stated you were indeed promised that direct access to TPB would be available, then you do have a cause for complaint. Remember that all telephone calls to Sky are recorded and the recrdings are kept for several months.

However, all you need to do is to use a simple proxy site and you can circumvent the blocking. I am sure that this is something that those who download porn will also be doing soon if the Government gets its way an blocks all adult material from being accessed in the UK.

It is important to understand that the blocking is only being done as a direct result of a court order. Prior to this there was no problems at all.

Domestic ISP's maybe, it's certainly not filtered on any of the Server connections I have access to.
