      Sky kit adding to latency

When I do a tracert to thinkbroadband.com the third hit is 89.200.131.173. This is a piece of equipment belonging to Sky. From then onwards pings are increased by at least 10ms.

      1 1 ms 2 ms 1 ms home.gateway.home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
      2 30 ms 29 ms 28 ms cr1.lcwor.uk.easynet.net [87.87.224.64]
      3 25 ms 23 ms 23 ms ip-87-87-173-65.easynet.co.uk [87.87.173.65]
      4 36 ms 38 ms 38 ms 89.200.131.183

If I tracert to bbc.co.uk the third hop is a different IP, but the 10ms is still there.

      1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms home.gateway.home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
      2 29 ms 29 ms 27 ms cr1.lcwor.uk.easynet.net [87.87.224.64]
      3 23 ms 22 ms 23 ms ip-87-87-173-65.easynet.co.uk [87.87.173.65]
      4 42 ms 46 ms 46 ms 0278086a.bb.sky.com [2.120.8.106]
      5 39 ms 39 ms 39 ms ntl-ge2-9.prt0.rbsov.bbc.co.uk [212.58.238.189]

      ITV.com

      1 2 ms 2 ms 5 ms home.gateway.home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
      2 28 ms 30 ms 33 ms cr1.lcwor.uk.easynet.net [87.87.224.64]
      3 23 ms 25 ms 23 ms ip-87-87-173-65.easynet.co.uk [87.87.173.65]
      4 46 ms 46 ms 46 ms 02780a0c.bb.sky.com [2.120.10.12]

The lag appears to be a hand over point from Easynet to bb.sky.com. Is there any way of reducing the lag?

Re: Sky kit adding to latency

there are certain latency's involved in a link as the fastest it can travel is the speed of light

hope 2 and 3 are local to your exchange hop 4 is at linx in london
sky's core also reply's to pings on a low priority
e.g. do main routing first reply to pings with spare cpu cycles

      so in my case
hop 4 is a sky ip in linx that responds to pings when it feels like it
hop 5 is the hand off to thinkbroadbands provider at linx and it reply's to pings promptly

so in my case there is 10ms latency on a 160 mile fibre link from me to linx london
if i lived in say reading that may be 6 ms from me to linx
if i lived in say scotland that may be 20 ms from me to linx etc

then when you account 4 ms of that latency for fastpath from me to the dslam
does 6ms on a 160 mile link seem that bad?

At best it could be maybe half of that 6ms

e.g. if you had one solid fibre cable from your house to linx london

you are also doing this wireless which isnt wise and you seem to have around 22ms latency from yourself to the dslam
which you have to account for

traceroute to thinkbroadband.com (80.249.99.130), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
      1 aurora.shonk.org (192.168.0.1) 0.693 ms 0.685 ms 0.695 ms
2 * * * (BT DSLAM THAT DOESNT REPLY TO PINGS)
      3 ip-84-38-37-16.easynet.co.uk (84.38.37.16) 12.944 ms 13.901 ms 13.164 ms (SKY CORE AT EXCHANGE)
      4 027808c3.bb.sky.com 14.392 ms 14.916 ms 17.210 ms (SKY CORE AT LINX)
5 linx-gw1.thn.ncuk.net (195.66.224.240) 10.139 ms 10.432 ms 10.174 ms (HAND OFF AT LINX TO THINKBROADBAND PROVIDER)

It was easier to show this when i was on fastpath on adsl 2+
as the third hop used to reply to pings promptly due to it being a legacy easynet router
and it would be something like this

traceroute to thinkbroadband.com (80.249.99.130), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
      1 aurora.shonk.org (192.168.0.1) 0.693 ms 0.685 ms 0.695 ms
      2 easynet.dslam.easynet.co.uk 8.360 ms 7.980 ms 8.110 ms (EASYNET STINGER DSLAM)
      3 cr1.exchange-id.easynet.co.uk 4.144 ms 4.101 ms 4.164 ms (EASYNET CORE AT EXCHANGE)
      4 027808c3.bb.sky.com 14.392 ms 14.916 ms 17.210 ms (SKY CORE AT LINX)
5 linx-gw1.thn.ncuk.net (195.66.224.240) 10.139 ms 10.432 ms 10.174 ms (HAND OFF AT LINX TO THINKBROADBAND PROVIDER)
