7K at the router - 386 kbps at the pc?

Our broadband service is usually adequate but it has been known to slow down for a while, usually solved with a router reset.

My PC is connected with a lan cable and for the last few days the speed has been dismal. Both for wired and wireless devices.

7K at the router - 386 kbps at the pc?-test.jpg

As I say, normally one pc connected by a cable and several more laptops, ipads etc all happily interneting but lately just me on my own and I can see the pictures build, line by line. I thought it might be wifi interference or some such but I am wirelessly connected so it can not be that.

Any suggestions what I can check out next?

We have not changed anything this week, all phones, filters, cables etc are just as they were last week.

Re: 7K at the router - 386 kbps at the pc?

I just connected my laptop to the internet through my mobile phone (tethered wirelessly) and got a speedtest.net result of 6.83mbps.

The issue is between the router and the devices on the network but what can it be? How can I check?

Re: 7K at the router - 386 kbps at the pc?

Failing any advice I started deleting processes using task manager. The culprit appears to be Google's Music Manager. Deleting that process put speedtest straight back to 6K.

I don't know if it is always going to swamp the router, but as I am still uploading files as part of the itunes/play synch process it might be due to that.

Over loading the upload will effect your download speed badly. Can you restrict the rate you are uploading?

This is a danger of using any on-line cloud storage system. Initially your computer will want to upload it's contents to the cloud storage so that you can download them later from another device.

A cheeky way around this would be to visit someone with a faster upload connection, but it will still take several hours to complete the task if you have a large music collection.

Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Maxing the upload will degrade the download speeds, even when downloading you need some upload bandwidth so you can send back the acknowledgements so the remote end knows you received the data.

It's less important for UDP (which is essentially fire and forget) but since most downloading.etc is TCP based it will affect it.

Not quick but quick enough. Be glad when Birmingham gets Sky cable.
