      Unhappy Very slow download speed and intermittent connection!

      Hello everyone, I have been having problems with my broadband recently. My download speed fluctuates between 0.3mbps to 1mbps for the past month now. The last day that I had a good connection was February 16th in which I had 4.32 mbps download speed. I phoned Sky last week and they posted me a replacement ADSL connector, which made no difference whatsoever.

      Secondly, my router decides to reset itself at random intervals, which i annoying as I am kicked off of xbox live and my downloads are interrupted. What happens is that the "i" light on my router changes to orange and I do not regain connection until after a 5-10 minute wait.

      The first thing to try is plug into the Test socket using only the ADSL cable supplied by Sky and post your stats from there.
      How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

      If you do not have a Test socket, remove everything you have plugged into the phone circuit, including Sky boxes and plug your router into the Master socket again using only the ADSL cable supplied by Sky.

      Thanks for replying.

      I was speaking to a Sky advisor last night and he asked me to test the main socket. Unfortunately he said that it actually made the connection and download speed WORSE.

      If you want our help, please do as I ask. Using the Test socket cannot possibly make the connection worse.

      If that is from the Test socket then you either have a fault on your external line or your router is faulty. To help diagnose the the first can you plug a corded phone on its own direct into the Test socket. Dial one digit and listen, there should be no noise except possibly a very faint hiss. Alternately you can try dialling 17070 and follow the instructions for testing your line. Any noise, report it to your phone rental provider as a noisy voice line.

      To rule out a faulty router do you have another one you can try, or can you borrow one? It would not need to be set up for Sky, just sync with the exchange and show the speed.

      There is lots of noise which means that I can barely hear whoever I am calling. Lots of hissing and crackling.

      I also do not have another router that I can test at this time. I strongly believe that there is a fault with the line, as the Sky worker already tested my line and have raised the issue for investigation.

      That is probably what is wrong with your broadband. If you get that fixed, your problems should go away. You may have to keep calling Sky to get BTO on the job.
