      Unstable ping

      Hey there,

basically my ping while gaming has a tendency to spike up and down for maybe 3 days and then return to normal. Unfortunately this can be quite annoying when your ping isnt amazing in the first place. I'm on sky connect and i do live about 5k from the exchange but the bit I'm not getting is why my ping is ok some days but not so good the others? (usualy around 70 but then cont fluctuates to 120 -130)

i used to have a general dl speed of about 120kbs but now if I dl through say steam overnight i spike to about 200 - 400 kbs which to me is amazing (sad i know)

im curious to know if this sudden improvement in dl speed is effecting my ping or if my profile has been changed without being made aware?

heres my stats anyhow try not to laugh to hard

      Statistics

      System Up Time: 24:09:49
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1589624 3027209 0 556 0 24:00:27
      LAN 3032970 1616331 0 0 906 24:09:49
      WLAN 14471 8173 0 0 0 24:09:22
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1600 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 9.6 db 16.0 db

      Any advice would be welcome,

ps. No the router is not plugged into the test socket but that only helps by around an amount of 5 -10 ish

      thanks liam

      Re: Unstable ping

Unstable Ping could be congestion, either at your end or at Sky's end

Also do you mean actually mean Kilobits (Little b) or KiloBytes (Big B)

1600 kbps = 200KB/s But there are some overheads to take into account so it's more like 180KB/s so unless you're line is dropping out and re-syncing at a higher speed 400KB/s is simply not possible on your line.

If it's 400kbps then something is seriously wrong or there's still congestion as it should be at Least 3x that.

Connect always used to be pretty oversubscribed and awful due to the high cost of BT centrals (on 20CN) even the WBC links on 21CN are expensive in comparison to the equivalent capacity on LLU. If you have connect you might want to consider changing ISP.

      Re: Unstable ping

400 Kilobytes /s is not possible with that sync speed, it's a long line at best you'll get 2-3 Mbit/s

Slow speeds aside I'm not sure if the High ping is congestion on Skys end or not

      Re: Unstable ping

Steam's dlm is very inaccurate at calculating download speed, and should be ignored.

      Re: Unstable ping

I'm currently suffering with a ping issue also. My ping is affected during peak times. Off peak, my ping is around 28-35 then at peak times it goes as high as 300ms. My issue is more than likely due to the exchange being over capacity.
If you want to check if your exchange is over capacity, here's a link that someone posted to my thread that can tell you.

Connect is Vastly different to the LLU network, generally it tends to be the connection between BTW and Sky that gets congested on connect meaning all connect customers are affected.

      Re: Unstable ping

thought 400 was a bit excessive for my sync speed.

Im not to bothered with the dl speed now as I just dl over night, however i usually enjoy what i consider to be decent ping on European servers.

an example (prob a bad one) is my mumble ping, ill be steaming along nicely at 52ping ish for maybe 4 -5 days but then itl go to 70-80 ish for 3 days. Now i know tht may not seem like a huge amount but what does happen with that increase is that my ping ingame decides to increase as well as spike around like a punk kids gelled hair style pretty much making the game unplayable for two days.

The first few years with connect i never had issues like this but recently its starting to become a common occurrence.

Oh yer the connection speed has changed yet again...

PS: stupid question incoming, the telephone extension cable from socket to router is very very long and the original one, will a newer shorter one make any difference?

      thanks again

      Re: Unstable ping

Plugging into the main socket will help if possible, otherwise is it's a plugin extension or is it a hard wired one?

      Re: Unstable ping

I honestly don't know what the bt bloke did, apparently the upstairs socket that im currently using should be equal to the master socket even though it isnt... which i find hard to believe. However the only way ill be able to use the downstairs master socket is to also use the plug in adapters that utilize the electric mains as im not going back to wireless.
