      VPN Throttled - Help

I'm a regular home worker. Today is typical of the problems I have using VPN. Using Broadband Speed Checker - THE UK's No.1 Broadband Speed Test, when I test my own PC directly over broadband I get about 4Mbps download and about 0.7Mbps upload speed. Using the same test on my company laptop over VPN, I get about 0.4Mbps download and much the same upload. The connection is intermittent and drops every day about 3pm, and at other more random times. My Video conferencing client is rendered useless and today my IP phone won't work either.

My company claim they don't throttle the line speed at the VPN concentrators and tell me to contact my ISP.

I have the Sky D-link router and a Sky Broadband unlimited package.

      Can anyone help?

      Thanks.

Is the VPN concentrator in the UK? Does your VPN client produce any log or diagnostic files? Have you tried a program such as MTR (My Trace Route) to check if there are any bottlenecks along the route?

      Re: VPN Throttled - Help

      First that website isnt 100%

Secondly there are so many variables with vpn

latency added from encrypting the tunnel
latency added to get from point a to point b in the tunnel for all requests
latency from your adsl upto 60ms depending on your interleaving level
location of the vpn server and route taken
      load on the vpn server
      latency of works internet connection
upstream / downstream of works connection
      traffic utilization of works connection
      etc etc...
