      Blocking an IP range

      Hi there,

      I have a issue regarding latency with my conection, due to the use of Spotify within my household. I'm not in a position to kill my family, so instead I'm trying to block the service via my modems firewall.

      Morals aside, here's what I need to do to block Spotify:

      Block the following IP-range: 78.31.8.0 MASK: 255.255.248.0

      I read the information from the following link:
      Nisses blog Blog Archive How to block Spotify on your network

      How can I go about doing this? I'm looked in the modems settings but nothing allows me to 'Block the following IP-range: 78.31.8.0 MASK: 255.255.248.0'.

      The modem I have is a Sagemcom F@ST2504N, and I'm using Sky Broadband Unlimited. I'm unaware of the modems firmware version.

      All help is appreciated,
      Thanks.

      Re: Blocking an IP range

      Firstly, create a custom service called spotify for port 4070 via Security > Services.

      Next, navigate to Security > Firewall > Outbound

      Create three new entries, each blocking IP range 78.31.8.0 - 78.31.15.255, for the following services. HTTP, HTTPS, and the Spotify service you just created.

      Thanks for the reply.

      Within the entry creation, there is no option block an IP range, unless I'm staring right at it. See screenshot:

      Anyone help?
      Thanks.

      edit

      just tried anyway, wouldnt work. i seem to be lacking the option. could this be due to legacy firmware?

      You are staring right at it.

      You need to change the wan dropdown so it lets you fill in the Start and End IP, your range would then be anything between those IP's

      Also if you don't already have services defined and need to add them

      HTTP = port 80

      HTTPS = port 443

      I can't use the finishing IP '78.31.15.255'. I get an error saying 'Invalid destination ip mask'.

      I don't get the error if I use a number lower than 255, but then Spotify can still connect.

      Am I doing something wrong?

      Re: Blocking an IP range

      Have you tried using the Block Sites function on the router, this may be simpler than setting up firewall rules. If you put Spotify in the block box, this may do the job. Tried it on my router and it blocks access to Spotify pages. but that may not be sufficient to block downloading.

      Not without replacing the router sadly.
