Ok, that will explain it then.

Quite a few others on the forum have reported changes in connection speeds when BTO were installing Fibre in the local area. It should settle once they have stopped cramming more fibre cables in the trunking.

Once your area is live and the work has completed, things should settle down again.

As Scubbie suggests, that may be the reason for the fluctuations. When they finish the fluctuations should cease.

I think the reason the noise margin has decreased is that DLM has reduced the transmit power, if it stays stable at that they will leave it. If it drops out it will either increase the power again or reduce the speed. The aim is to give as high a stable speed as possible with as low power as possible. Extra power means extra cost.

Another reboot in the early hours sees the downstream increase quite a bit, the noise margin has increased from 3.8 db yesterday to 4.0 db today.

I have just looked in My Sky. It mentions line testing began on 23 September and will be completed within 10 days. The last time I looked in here, it showed that line testing had begun on 5 September. So the line testing must have finished and for some reason started back up shortly after again.

      Here's my current stats:

Re: Line testing has begun again over 2 years since it had previously finished, why is this?

What I think is happening is that when the BTO Engineers are putting in the Fibre cables, they are using the same conduits that the copper cables are using or some conduits bunched up close to them.

As they are putting the cables in, they are moving the exiting cables around a little and squeezing them into an ever tighter space. This messes with the ADSL signals that all the telephone lines are carrying, which is causing cross-interference.

On top of this, any loose connections/joints are also being affected.

DLM is picking up on all of this activity and interpreting it as a line issue and having to reprofile your line.

At least this is what I think is happening.

I don't think it has changed anything, you will get a small difference in the noise margin from second to second. If you had taken the stats a few minutes before or after you did, there would probably have been slightly different noise margins.

Another reboot in the early hours.

Downstream has dropped a good amount, and noise margin is much higher.

That looks great now. You have only dropped by half a Mb which is nothing with a 19Mb connection and your noise margin is much better. You are a full Mb better download and more importantly a good half Mb up on your upload. Let's hope it stays at that.

Another reboot in the early hours, and the downstream has dropped quite a bit, noise margin stays about the same.

Another reboot in the earlier hours sees a very small drop in both the downstream and upstream. But the noise margin had dropped by over 3 db from yesterday.

Re: Line testing has begun again over 2 years since it had previously finished, why is this?

The router hasn't rebooted in over 50 hours, so perhaps DLM line testing has finished. Rather surprised to why the noise margin is at its 3.5 - 3.8 db level, when previously it was around 3 db higher.
