      Advice on speed/connection

      Hi all

First thanks for a great forum, I'd apreciate you guys/gals casting your eyes over my stats, reason being....
A couple of weeks ago my download speed dropped to 1mb, connection has always been rock solid over the 6/7 years with sky. Long story short, after numerous calls to sky my Draytek 2800 had failed, confirmed by swapping to a linksys I had to hand whilst on the phone to sky's tech guy so sky are posting a new router (forgot to ask which one). Didnt fancy whatever router sky are sending so I got a Billion 7800n all setup working fine. Whilst on the phone to sky I asked about switching to ADSL2+ which he tried to do but couldnt not sure why but he did say I could get at least 10mb download once the new router was up and running so....what do you guys think I could achieve should I push for ADSL2+?

Basic stats from the Billion are:
      G.DMT
      Up 416
      Down 7616
      SNR UP 17.0
      SNR Down 7.9
      ATT Up 24.5
      ATT Down 37.0

      Thanks in advance
      Jim

You'll be best of asking that they run DLM again, that'll see you get the best speeds most times these days.

Whilst you wait for that to happen (could take up to 72 hours), ask them to either:

      1) Manually reprofile to 18016/1216 profile; or
      2) Manually reprofile to 10240/800 gaming profile.

Dependant on the advisor, you may find they'll be picky about the first option, so ask for the second option if they won't do the first. Also, most at first level support do not have the authority to change profiles manually, only a select few do. Thus, it may require a few phone calls.

What settings are you using for the ADSL mode in the Billion?

You can configure it to connect just how you want it to. That'll be the ADSL mode setting under the WAN setting.

Try just ticking ADSL2 & ADSL2+ only , then save the configuration & it'll want to restart.

      Thanks for the replys!

      Hi user05,

I was going to wait until I got the new router sky are sending and then ring them (didnt fancy pushing my luck with a non sky router)
but maybe ill try them sooner. From what your saying though which is what I wanted to find out...my line is capable of more?

      Hi Timc

I tried what you said but it wouldnt connect, it will only connect with G.DMT
Just to clarify, whilst I was on the phone to the sky tech guy last week he tried to switch me to ADSL2+ but the system wouldnt let him,
this was before he diagnosed a faulty router though.

Thanks both for your help so far

Just make sure that the Billion is configured to accept ADSL2/2+ so if Sky try again it should work.

      Re: Advice on speed/connection

You should be able to achieve about 10Mb with those stats, however if you're on ADSL, moving to ADSL2+ increases you line attenuation by a few DB. If you've got a stable line though, DLM may set your noise margin closer to 3db which will bump up the speed by up to a couple of Mb.

I can recommend the VDSL plate. Bit more expensive but no messing around with wires!
