      Drops and Timeouts?

whenever anyone in my house is using the on demand service my gaming on sky lags me out of call of duty games when im chosen as host. But sometimes it happens when on demand isnt on but mainly when the service is in use.
Is there a way to connect the sky box wirelessly to the router to help the problem or does the router need replacing?

Can you post your stats, link is in my signature.

Also, assuming you don't have a fast enough connection then you will see issues when you're gaming and someone is downloading. The bandwidth needs to be shared therefore your gaming quality is sacrificed. There is nothing you can do to fix this. It happens.

      Re: Drops and Timeouts?

I did a test for this once.

My pings to bbc are normally 24-25ms, but whilst downloading from on demand they jump to around 30ms & are quite erratic, eg: 27, 31, 26ms etc.

It's normal for that to happen & tbh i thought it would be a lot worse than that.
I do have a 19999 / 1175kbps connection though, so maybe that's why it's no so bad for me, ie: plenty of bandwith to go around.

I'd still never have a game while using it for anything else though.

      Re: Drops and Timeouts?

I noticed some short lag spikes (bars dropping to red) when lots of people were browsing the net etc. This was when I was on ADSL at 4.5Mb. Now don't notice it on Fibre.

It is unlikely to make much difference. You can select the server you wish to use on speedtest.net. Just click the New Server button and select the server you want.

Sky will not fit a new socket unless the old one is faulty. Not having a Test socket does not make it faulty unfortunately.

If you are having speed issues Sky will insist on you plugging your router into the master socket or test socket if you have one. Unless it is a very large property or there is a fault on your internal wiring, in practice it is unlikely to make much difference.

It depends a lot on the wiring. Some find there is little or no difference, others find a very big difference. You will not know without trying. That is the advantage of a Test socket, plugging into it isolates all the other wiring so there is no interference from the wiring in the house.
