Wireless fine, cable rubbish - honest.

Here's one. New address, new Sky account, shiny new white router with smiley face for Intnet connection indicator.

Laptop XP. Had to connect main machine (desktop) wirelessly as too far from incoming line. Automatically did same (wireless connect) with laptop. Everything there fine, but, thinking about it, thought, that as laptop near to router, would try cable connection direct from laptop to router. Used Sky speed check for wireless before changing from wireless to cable-direct, and got around 1.6 Mb. Connected by cable, ran same test, and got a massive increase to 5.8 Mb. Joyously pleased, watched a test vid - well, didn't, cos couldn't.

I watch TV series from a site called, usefully, if unimaginatively, Watch Series. With wireless connection all was very fine right from the off. Not only watching individual episodes, but also while two more downloading in background - I always load three episodes pausing each as Pause becomes available, to allow each initial buffering to supply plenty of immediately-watcheable download. All was very OK. No buffering, no jerky, no problems - very occasional brief buffering early evening when USA wakes up and clogs system, but I just Pause, make tea, and on return, with said tea in hand, everything is fine again.

Buuuuuut... connected, as stated, via cable to router, and, despite massive and joyous speed hike, EVERYTHING stuttering and walking through treacle. Vids unwatcheable - jerky vid and out-of-synch sound. Not only that but took five times as long to Open any page, Closing any page took ten times as long, and, while connected thusly, opening non-intnet stuff - Windows Explorer, etc., also order of magnitude slower.

Me disbelieving. Ran speed check again; still at 5-point-something, and yet still unwatcheable. This happened Friday. Had to leave flat to babysit overnight so only had time to try turning off Hardware Acceleration in Flash - remembered that this once worked in murky past some time ago for something else - different machine, though, but, despite age, remembered. Made no difference, and took ages just doing that. Just now back home, Saturday, and v. tired, so will probably not try other things 'til tomorrow. Thought I'd get this off before heading up the wooden hill.

Haven't yet tried other vid download sources, but even if non-Flash streams prove to be OK, this problem with Flash remains.

I did try searches both here and on net, but distinction between cable and wireless simply lost in other keyword returns.

      Ideas? Thanks, J.

Ooops. Just noticed that tech inf at top left in no longer correct. I do have Unlimited; which is why I chose Sky, but the Router details are from past, and I don't have TV. However, as the problem relates to the same equipment, but between wireless and cable connections, such is irrelevant. Will update, cross me heart and hope to die. J.

      Hi Jay,

I am guessing that you now have a Sky Hub SR101.

Could you post your current connection stats please?

How to get your Sky Router statistics

Also to change your details, at the top of the page, click on the "Settings" link. Scroll down a little and click on "Edit Profile". Within that page are the options to change what you have.

Also, just in case, your old Sagem 2504 should be able to work instead, but the Sky Hub should be much better.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Its probably worth updating the NIC drivers, even if Windows says they are up to date.
