      Only half meg speed

Hi their people hope you are all good.
Ive been a customer of sky for a while now. and never have i had such poor service. Im on the verge of switching its that bad.
First of all my connection always drops. Had an engineer out today, since he come their has been no drops lets hope it stays like this. He was the 4th engineer i had to get called out for the same problem. I just get a feeling that sky tech team have no clue about these problems. Not saying i di though.
secondly on the router stats page it says my speed is just under 5meg and when doing a speed test this confirms it, but when i actually download something, the speed has never exceeded 500kbps. im connected from pc to router wired and the router is connected direct to the master socket.
any help would be greatfully appreciated

I am not sure about what's happening but I think that your Router might be faulty, which one is it?

      Re: Only half meg speed

      Just to confirm:

Your router is synced at 5Mb (or 5000kbps as it would read on the router).
When you download a file does it read 500kb per second or 500KB per second?

I only ask so as to make sure that your reading the figures and entering it correctly on the site. There is a lot of confusion between small and upper case letters when it comes to data sizes.

If you're downloading at 500KB per second then this is correct. Are you downloading via wireless or cable?

Your through put is usually around 85% - 95% of your sync speed.

Your download speed is determined, if downloading from a websites server, by bandwidth on the servers end and how busy it is. I have seen my download speed vary quite drastically depending on who I download from.

Also, where are you downloading from, utorrent or a website?

      Re: Only half meg speed

500KB is the right speed so your good. 5000KB is 50mb.
Go on torrents and download something ( legal or not) and your speeds will be 400-500
So why is your service so bad again ??

      Re: Only half meg speed

With a 5Mbps (5000kbps) sync speed you should be downloading at anything between 531 kB/s and 594 kB/s (this takes into account the 85%-95% of sync speed (the norm).

As GarbageGuy and myself said, if you can download a large file, I usually test download speeds on downloading itunes (the average sort of file size I download). When it's downloading and the download speed figure become stable, report the speed back here .

      Re: Only half meg speed

What speed does your router say that you're actually syncing at as I've read that your pevious post states "just under" 5Mb (5000kbps).

If you're downloading at 400 kB/sec then your throughput speed is about 3200kbps (3.2Mbps). Your router sync speed should be at about 3764kbps (3.8Mbps). So to answer your question 400kB/sec doesn't equal 4Mb (Megabit). To make this process easier, can I ask that you click the Viewing Router Stats link in my signature and follows the instructions to copy your router stats into your next post. This will make this a bit easier. Thanks!

      Re: Only half meg speed

Your current speeds are fine, the maximum download speed you will most likely attain will be 434KB/s (depending on the websites bandwidth), you will not be able to obtain 500+KB/s. It does appear that your line may be able to handle more sync speed though.

The speed estimate here on Skyuser tells me this:
      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 6mb to 7mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.
Your upstream speed can be improved because of the high noise margin.

At this point I would suggest a quick phonecall to Sky Broadband Technical Support and mention that you have improved your line quality and would like to see if they can increase both the download and upload speeds. I'd hope Sky would manually change this for you, if not put you back onto the DLM training.

Any improvements or concerns then report back .

I hope this helps, posting your stats has cleared the situation up so thanks.
