      Slow Speed

Hi I am new to the forum but seeking a bit of advice/help. I have had broadband for many years with Sky and have experienced problems with connectivity in the last 12 months. Have had engineers visit due to the fact that my broadband connection would just go off for no apparent reason. Sky agreed to send me a new router Installed and all going well until about a week ago when my speed dropped dramatically. Rang Sky who passed to customer services but unfortunately (and I did tell them!) I was away on holiday when they tried to contact so have to start all over again. My router stats are below which shows my speed to be very slow. Connection is run off an extension box, always has been and this also runs my Sky TV and we have no problems with that. Have already tried testing from master socket (this is located away from a electricity socket & has never been used for any phone line - this was also checked by engineer and found to be ok) and plugged into a different extension but no difference. Speed on old router (although I do not know what this was) was ok.

      Thanks!

      Re: Slow Speed

It could be that your extension has been slowly failing over the past few months, your stat show the noise margin is around the 3db and if it was at the normal ( used to be standard) 7db, your speed would be even worse. Could you plug the router into your master socket / test socket and post some new stats ( not related as such, but just spent most of the morning with my IT at work trying to figure out why my machine was not getting info from the server at the correct speed, to find out it was just the linksys switch had come to the end of its life)

      Re: Slow Speed

Hi thanks for the reply. I will try to use the master socket but will take some time as involves moving a unit in the hall & setting up an extension lead for the electrical socket! Will post stats after i have completed.

      Hi J,
It does sound like a pain, but it is the easiest way to rule out your internal wiring (extension set up)

      Re: Slow Speed

If you can, could you please post the connection stats from both the Master Socket and the Test Socket, if you have a split faceplate as shown in the pic below:

Stats from router in master socket. Can't access test socket as plate up against wall badly fitted by BT! Any help appreciated.

      Re: Slow Speed

      WOW

      Those are dreadful figures.

      ADSL2+ Speed Test

We estimate your line is capable of between 8mb to 9mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

You are connected at 160kbps - You really need to try the test socket if you can.

      Re: Slow Speed

Thanks but it is impossible to access the test socket as the plate is right up against the wall. I dont want to break it trying to get it off as will be charged by BT even though they put it in in the 1st place. Sky are testing line at the minute but looks like an engineer will be needed - they have agreed that speed is dismal!

      Re: Slow Speed

Have you got another socket that is an extension that the router is plugged into?

      Re: Slow Speed

I think that these figures indicate that either you have something connected to the telephone line which is not correctly filtered or you have have some major wiring issues.

If you have the socket as shown above, it would be really beneficial if you could post the stats from it please. Also in either case, could you post a photograph of the Master Socket please?

As for the filter issue, just a quick reminder, EVERYTHING must be connected to a microfilter, unless you have a properly connected filtered faceplate in the Master socket. One common problem is the Sky STB. Many are fitted with a splitter which advises you never to unplug it. This is misleading as it too MUST be plugged into an ADSL filter.

Edit: Ged got in so my post appears out of sync. If there is a way of accessing the Test Socket, it would be good though.
