when you have a limited IP address it usually starts with 169.xxx

So that means you're not getting an IP from the router DHCP server.

      ---

an IP address starting with "169" is a "self-assigned" address. This address range is reserved and called the "link local" address range by IANA. It allows a computer to communicate using IP locally even if a DHCP server can't be found. 169.*.*.* addresses are non-routable and typically mean that your computer is not connected to the network at all, but is in its own private world, unable to connect to other computers on the network.

      .0 Adapter
      Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-10-1C-E7-9F-A5
      Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
      Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
      IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
      Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
      DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
      DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
      Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 13 October 2006 17:29:28
      Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 16 October 2006 17:29:28

key thing to look for is the this bit:
      IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
      Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Thanks to the following members: - Ratti3, Saturday and Garyb. Just wanted to let you know that I followed Saturday's advice, I turned the router off and then reset it, left it off for a few minutes (meanwhile the laptop was off also) When I turned the router on I plugged in the ethernet cable then once all the relevant lights came on I turned on the laptop. I connected to the internet no problem and then I unplugged the ethernet cable and tried to connect wirelessly, I couldn't believe it when it finally worked. It asked me to enter the key again on the underside of the router though before it connected. I'm so pleased it's back up and running. I have noticed that a few people have been having trouble with their wireless connection so I hope they all get to read this and that it works for them!

Garyb I also wanted to let you know that I did the ipconfig thing that you told me to do and it basically came up with all the settings that you showed me in your last post apart for the IP address, mine is slightly different as it has a 3 on the end (192.168.0.3) so everything is hunky dory on that front.

Any way guys thanks for all your help, thanks to you I'm back online again now. So glad that I don't have to spend another hour tonight on the phone to sky technical support, never 100% confident that all of the staff know what they are doing!

If I have any more problems in the future I'll know where to find help.

I sometimes that if the laptop has not shutdown correctly, when I startup aain, I sometimes dont get a proper wireless connection. Seems connected but no network or internet access.

I have found that if I turn my wireless card off then back on again, I can connect to my network ok.

I think the wireless card does not shut down or wake up properly sometimes.

      Matt
