      PS3 BBC iPlayer buffering - using DG834GT

Currently, I have a SKY branded Netgear DG834GT.

When I use the BBC iPlayer on my PS3 (wireless), all programmes buffer up every few mins and are unwatchable. Could someone please advise if my stats look OK?

Would replacing my router with the new SR101 be likely to improve the situation?

Could you temporarily try running an Ethernet cable from the router to the PS3? If this works well, then a WiFi n rated router could well be the answer.

Also with my TV I have to ensure that I have about 8mb free on the bandwidth to ensure that BBC iPlayer HD content doesn't buffer too often. I trust that you connection is reasonably quiet when using the PS3 to watch the iPlayer content.

Unfortunately, PS3 doesn't do wireless N, so can't see an N rated router helping.

If things are significantly better with ethernet but isn't a practical long term solution, you could try changing wireless channels to a less busy one.

Best solution would be home plugs though.
Haven't had to use them personally but 1000's swear by them & everything should improve, including online gaming.

I thought that some versions of the PS3 did support WiFi n. However, as you point out, HomePlugs are a favoured alternative if the Ethernet cable is unsuitable for the longer term.

Later versions of the xbox360 have wifi n, but don't think the ps3 ever got it.

You've got me intrigued though scubbie.

      Google here i come!

No wifi n for ps3's (unless there's been a new version released in the last 6 weeks).

      Just remembered habler.
PS3 did get a firmware update the other day. Thursday i think.

I can't imagine not having it would cause the issues you're experiencing, but it's v4.25.

If you don't have it yet & you're going to try ethernet temporarily, it might be a good idea to download it then as it's a good test of throughput speed.

Also, some people have had issues downloading it over a bad wifi connection, resulting in database corruption etc.

Re: PS3 BBC iPlayer buffering - using DG834GT

Thanks all - some useful stuff to consider. I will see if I can come up with a length of cable for a temporary test. I wont be able to install it permanently though. I will check for a PS3 software update, but I don't think I have ever had a watchable feed.

Scubbie, my connection must have been quiet when I tried to watch the iPlayer late last night. My kids werent using it then. I will try swapping to another wireless channel later.

I don't think the PS3 and router are on the same power circuit so Homeplugs may not work. I'll try to work this out.

      Cheers.

As long as they are on the same meter they should work. You could get a pair from Argos and if they don't work, take them back for a refund.
Buy TP-LINK TPTL-PA211KIT 200Mbps Powerline Ethernet Kit - Twin at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Modem routers, Modem routers.

Not necessarily so with a modern split load consumer unit where , say , upstairs & downstairs circuits could be on the different sections as was the case when I had a new CU fitted. Had to re-jig the circuits to get the homeplugs to work.
