Moved to New Sky Network 30 Aug - speed halved no evidence of DLM

      Hi,

I have been enjoying download speeds of 6-7 Mb for months now, ever since Open Reach sorted out a fault on my line. On 09 Aug Sky informed me by letter that I was to be transferred to their new network.

On 30 Aug I received an email headed "Gigantic news - your Sky experience has begun". It was worded as if I was a new customer and stated that "We will start a download speed of up to 4Mb on the first day, then increase your speeds and set your line to provide the best speed and most reliable connection."

Sure enough on the morning of the 30 Aug, the router stats showed "DownStream Connection Speed 3070
UpStream Connection Speed 798". The problem is that it has stayed there ever since. I have waited patiently for something to change, but it has not. MYSky - My Account has stated throughout that there is no line testing taking place.

The only problem that I can think of, is that we had a three hour powercut in the area on the morning of 31 August 2012. Would this have caused DLM to abort?

Here are my stats from the master socket today:

      ROUTER STATISTICS

      System Up Time: 64:50:22
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 13889588 20921739 0 170 146 0:13:45
      LAN 21273288 14093806 0 148 148 64:50:22
      WLAN 0 0 0 0 0 0:00:00
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3070 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 28.2 db
Noise Margin 13.3 db 15.3 db
      Poll Interval: (secs)

The only major difference to prior to 30 Aug is MER v PPPoa and the noise margin at 13.3db v c7db.

Sky originally estimated my speed at 4Mb and that is showing on My Sky, but after cleaning up inside the house, and bullying OR to repair the line, we have been consistently achieving better than that. Here is the record from SkyUser speed tests to prove the point:

      Test taken

      21 August, 2012 08:55:55 5952 Kbps 650 Kbps

You can see that the download speed has more than halved on 30 Aug and stayed there ever since.

What is the best way to resolve this please? Who should I call and what should I ask them to do? Is it reasonable to expect a download speed of approx 6000 Kbps again?

      Thanks for your help.

Re: Moved to New Sky Network 30 Aug - speed halved no evidence of DLM

These results 30 August, 2012 08:57:23 2624 Kbps 587 Kbps clearly show that your speed has more than halved.

You should be back where you were prior to the 30th

I would ring Sky and tell them that it looks like you have been capped and can they resolve it for you.

You should get approx 6 - 7 meg at least.

If the first person you speak to doesn't understand, then put the phone down and ring again.

Tell them that your router is in the test socket as well. (If you can put it in there, then do so, and get the stats from that)

Moved to New Sky Network 30 Aug - speed halved no evidence of DLM

Some of those August results seem wrong unless I'm misreading

They seems to be suggesting faster speeds than adsl2+ is physically capable of even in ideal conditions

I'd guess it's an antivirus app proxying the traffic to scan it and screwing up the result or its a caching issue

Edit: ah whoops I see what I've done no space between the seconds and the start of the speedtest result when being displayed on tapatalk

^^ The ones prior to the 30th look OK to me?

On an attenuation of 49 (Same as mine) you should expect to see about 7meg so the results are showing approx the right throughput / overheads surely.

Re: Moved to New Sky Network 30 Aug - speed halved no evidence of DLM

Thanks for the quick reply Newsreader.

I called Sky and they confirmed by text that the issue had been "raised to their Customer Solutions Team". Late last night the line was disconnected and reconnected at 5696 Kbps downstream, and has stayed there. I'm hoping that there will be further improvements, because there still seems to be more to go based on the the following readings, taken from the Mastersocket this morning:

      ROUTER STATISTICS

      System Up Time: 16:27:15
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 4370025 7236041 0 120 0 10:51:50
      LAN 7372957 4459152 0 0 148 16:27:15
      WLAN 0 0 0 0 0 16:26:48
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5696 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.5 db 28.2 db
Noise Margin 9.8 db 16.0 db
      Poll Interval: (secs)

If nothing changes in 24 hours, and the connection remains stable, I will call them again.

You will probably find it resyncs between 2-3 am and increases your speed again. You look good for 7+Mb down and 1.1Mb up.

      Thanks Isitme,

As you predicted there is another improvement this morning. Here are the current stats from the Master Socket:

      ROUTER STATISTICS

      System Up Time: 39:57:13
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 7934736 13127834 0 0 0 4:10:00

      WLAN 55493 648 0 0 0 39:56:46
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6147 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.5 db 28.2 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 14.5 db
      Poll Interval: (secs)

Again I hope the there is still a little more to come. The guy from Sky promised to call me back on Thursday pm to check that the speeds had recovered. He also stated that 7.1 Mbps was achievable.

As Tenar suggests, it would seem that my problem was simply that DLM did not start until I called Sky.

      Another uplift last night:

Just to finish this thread off, this is where we seemed to finished up:

      ROUTER STATISTICS

      System Up Time: 112:18:16
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 36651953 61264735 0 0 0 3:44:31

Line Attenuation 48.5 db 28.2 db
Noise Margin 4.8 db 14.4 db

Thanks to all for their help, and I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. Let's hope it's stable.
