Question New to Sky Broadband - Not Happy, help please!

      Hi guys,

I've had my sky BB (unlimited) for about 9 days now and the speed is rubbish. Down to about 1.08mbps now!

I'm plugged direct in to the test socket with no other phones/skybox/fax etc on the phone network (just the router), using a high quality ADSL filter and router cable (less than 0.5m long). My stats are:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 75139 78922 0 6250 36777 0:35:29
      LAN Down 0 0 0 0 0 0:36:21
      WLAN Up 94475 90044 0 39340 8185 0:35:53

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2558 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.5 dB 35.9 dB
Noise Margin 4.6 dB 14.1 dB

After after about 25 tests on Speeetest.net i'm getting anywhere between 1.08 to 2.49 mbs over the last few days.

Is this normal? Anyone got any advice?

      Thanks

As it stands, it looks like you are some distance from the telephone exchange.

Are you using the ADSL lead that is supplied with the router or one of your own?

Also, what kind of speeds did Sky estimate that you would get and what did you have with your last ISP?

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Yer, about 4.5km I think.

No, using a better quality lead (from ASDL Nation, along with there filter as well), should I go back to the cheap sky one?

First time I've had BB at this house, they said between 2 and 12.2mbps

      Thanks!

swap filters and cable also look to use test socket low snr on downstream indicates possible noise , aslo speedtest.net not always gives best results, but really your looking to reduce attenuation and increase snr

Re: New to Sky Broadband - Not Happy, help please!

Looking at the length of your line, you are doing well. There is a tool available on this site (follow the link above to the tools & tutorials) which can provide an estimate to your broadband speed based on the Line Attenuation. It suggests your line is capable of between 4mb to 5mb.

Whilst the lead and filter may be very good, could you try as tenar is asking and use one of the microfilters and ADSL lead supplied with the router and post the connection stats which you get from there.

The next thing which I would look at is the quality of your telephone cable between the Master Socket and where it leaves your home to go to the Green Street Cabinet. Do you have any BTO/BT junction boxes? If you do, could you please post a picture of it/them with the cover/s on & off. Hopefully we may be able to recognise it and make suitable suggestions.

Not knowing where you are makes it a little difficult to know if FTTC is in your area, or planned to be. Could you take a look at the SamKnows web site to see what it suggests?

Re: New to Sky Broadband - Not Happy, help please!

Thanks, this is the exchange: SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Milnsbridge (MYMIL) Exchange

      With sky cable/filter:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN MER 9219 9443 0 7288 197795 0:05:55
      LAN Down 0 0 0 0 0 0:06:38
      WLAN Up 10930 10562 0 224656 9556 0:06:16

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2557 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.5 dB 35.8 dB
Noise Margin 4.1 dB 16.0 dB

Any better? If i could get 4/5 mbps download I'd be happy. I can't even watch you tube at the moment My Three 3G connection is quicker!
