      Dlm/ speed question

      Hi, quick rundown
i have a line which has connected with no problems at 6mb for last 3 years, about 2 weeks ago i had a few problems on my line and it suddenly started losing sync and connection, nobody could identify a fault and my line speed dropped to about 4.5mb however the sky customer rep did re-enable dlm on my line for me to see if could perform better.
Now for the last 2 weeks its been fluctuating between 6.5 and 7.5mb which i was better than i was getting, however in the last few days ive had some problems on my line again, snr dropping and reconnecting at lower speeds,i was speakiing to a lady in tier 2 last night who was trying to help, and we think it may be because i have some roadworks near my house, on the main road to the exchange.
I was worried this may affect the dlm and it seems to have done so due to the line speed dropping and losing connection, dlm finished today and before the line testing sky said speed had been set to a max speed of 6.1 mb,

now it is saying its only 4.1mb.
Now i am currently connected at just over 6mb, line stats here
      6340 kbps
      41 db
      7 db
i have 2 questions, 1- if my line goes off again for any reason , is it only going to connect at 4.1mb max?
i rarely have d/c but im sure at some point it will reset

      2. is it possible to get the dlm put back on my line again, to see if it can re-enable the 6.1 (or higher) speed, if so how do i go about that, and is it worth waiting til i know the roadworks has finished, or should i just ask again?
many thanks for reading and any help and advice is appreciated

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

the problem with dlm is only good for keeping line stable but as it looks like roadworks or something like that is affecting your line then dlm may bring speed down to make more stable , most important is what is causing effect if snr and attenuation jumping about then dlm is not worth running until thses are stable

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

thats what im worried about, ive never had a single problem til two weeks ago,, and it seems stable now but if it is the roadworks, which strangley seem very sporadic,i am wary of it happening again, but i dont want to be stuck at the slower speed.
Its been stable for 2 days now at 6340, but sky my broadband page says max is 4.1mb..

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

hopefully should stay stable if not call sky to have line checked again especially if you start picking up any noise on telephone line but many times some lines will have a temporary fault so may be the last you have to worry

hope so, one thing though if the my sky broadband page says my line is set at 4.1mb, if my router goes off, resyncs or anything at any time, will it only re-connect at 4.1mb

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

if router stats as you say is 6340 kbps then should reconnect at that 4.1 mb your stating would be throughput or browsing speed which is different to line readings

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

the 4.1 is from the my broadband page
      says this
      Your Connection Details
We constantly monitor your line to make sure it has been set to support the fastest speed possible whilst maintaining a stable connection.
Line connection testing completed on 24/07/2012, resulting in the following settings:

Download speed setting Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to 4.1Mbps .
Upload speed setting Your connection has been set to an upload speed of up to 0.5Mbps .

Which is the bit thats bothering me

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

I wouldn't worry about the DLM figure tbh - As long as your wiring is as good as it can be, and is correctly filtered etc then you should continue to keep the higher rate.

If by any chance it drops again, just give Sky a call.

      With an attenuation of 41 you should be seeing speeds of;

      ADSL2+ Speed Test

We estimate your line is capable of between 8mb to 9mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

      Re: Dlm/ speed question

when the dlm was active on my line it did get me up to about 7.5mb,snr dropped to about 5 though, but didnt seem to have any problem, so that speed test estimate isnt far off, then i had the problems early this week which lasted about a day and half and it dropped it back down again.
But will be happy enough if stays at what it is
