I want to improve my broadband speed/stability - which faceplate?

I'm currently connecting my router via a 50 meter extension from the master socket connected to the back of the default BT faceplate. So I'm going to connect directly to the master socket. I've bought a replacement RJ11 cable which is decent quality (Belkin high speed 1.8m), but I still have the standard issue microfilter. I've been told that it would be better to use a purpose built faceplate adaptor eg. Adslnation, but I'm not sure which one to use, or if there are other manufacturers who produce even better faceplate adaptors. Any advice/opinions on this?

Finally is there any other hints and tips to improve my speed/stability, or have I got it all covered?

      Thanks a lot.

      Keiron.

Ditch the telephone extension, connect the router directly to the Master Socket (fit a filtered faceplate if preferred) and use a long Ethernet cable. If you require more ports, add a Network Switch. If you need a WiFi access point, use a Wireless Extender.

Before doing all that, it would be a good idea to get your connection stats from the end of the telephone extension, from the Master socket and from the Test Socket.

If you can't run an Ethernet cable, consider a pair of HomePlugs.

Connection Speed 3097 kbps 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation 57.5db 31.3db
      Noise Margin 7.3db 15.8db

Was 970kbps downstream when using extension so as you can see quite a significant improvement. Would it be worth using a different faceplate or would it make no difference?

Can you confirm where those stats were taken from please?

Test socket (behind Master Socket) using regular micro filter and no phones connected to the circuit.

Re: I want to improve my broadband speed/stability - which faceplate?

      That's fine.

Whilst there isn't going to be a huge improvement, I would suggest that when you fit the filtered faceplate that you make a friendly call to Sky so that they can trigger DLM to re-profile your connection.

Ideally DLM will configure the Noise Margin below 7dB. This cannot be done on a manual configuration.

The result should be a small increase in the download speed and perhaps a small improvement on the upload side.

The alternative would be to ask to be placed on "G.DMT" which is standard ADSL. You are in the zone where it can be faster to use ADSL, rather than ADSL2+. Sky recently trained up more staff to be able to manually reconfigure the connections. Many of these newly trained staff do not know how to set it to G.DMT properly so it may take a little convincing.
