      Regular disconnects, opinions?

      Hello,

      Every night between 4-6 the line will drop out almost like clockwork. I've removed the ring wire from the line and this has improved the noise margin somewhat. The router is around 5-6 years old (I think) and the problem is more apparent the more is connected, if noone is on it's less likely to disconnect. I've been in talks with Sky about altering the line but nothing seems to work, I've recently been put on the gaming profile (they didn't even ask, just did it) and this has not improved stability but has decreased the connection speed somewhat. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what's causing this and what can be done to resolve the unstable line?

      Hi there, I have recently had a ongoing intermittent broadband fault fixed after running for 3 years,

      Although my fault (as described here Major Broadband Fault - 2 years on and still no progress :() was not related to a specific time, I have been able to understand and troubleshoot the many factors to issues like these.


      Couple of Qs to help understand the issue:

      1. Are you sure the drop outs are a line problem (ie. have you looked at the logs/maintaince pages on the router, does the @ light change from green)?

      2. Is your line an underground or drop wire setup?

      3. How long has this gone on for?

      4. Are the drop outs only ever at 4-6 or have you noticed/logged issues at other times as well, like mornings?

      5. Have you tested the stability from the test socket without any phones or extensions?

      Also you said about the 'Gaming Profile'... This translates to FastPath mode on the line, which means it decreases the latency by removing error checking features along the line. My initial thoughts lead me to think that this mode is not suitable for your line distance and is causing your line to generate high amounts of errors and snapshots when the line is being intensely used, causing the router to have to reconnect to clear the line. A quick way to test this would be to ask sky to put your line on interleaved mode of 16ms and test it from there, I can give you the number for the Skys CST dept. number of you like, it will put you through to more knowledgeable line specialists.
