Ridiculously Slow BB for 4yrs 0.06 download

Hi can you ps help? I am writing on behalf of a friend as Ive just seen how slow his sky max BB is which he has put with for the past 4 yrs! (speeds below) He lives 200m from the exchange and apparently 4yrs ago he asked to be put on the unlimited package but was told that there were no more places left at the exchange for adsl2. He was told he would be upgraded as soon as a place became available and was and IS still is paying for max/unlimited subscription even tho he was never ever upgraded to the adsl package ad is stll on the connect package. Just hope you can sort it as his internet speeds are worse ive ever known, it takes ages just for a page to load and trying to watch video or listen to music online is totally impossible. If it cannot be sorted i am going to get him off of sky and go elsewhere. . Anyways the below results are taken with router connected to master BT socket. There is no other device using the internet and wireless is swithed off, Router was rebooted before the tests but there are no imprvements either way. Ps let me know if you need any more info. BIG THANKS

Your friend is on Sky Connect, which is a pretty shoddy package. Honestly, the best advice would be moving to another provider.

Indeed, Sky Connect isn't great. But he's synced at a good speed with loads left on the line. It it definitely not a computer fault? Is he connected via ethernet or Wifi? Have other computers been tried?

Its either Sky Connect's traffic management or it is exchange congestion. Could you (or your friend) run a BT speed test and post the results?

Call Sky and tell them you want moved to SkyLLU immediately. If it is not available at his exchange get a MAC and find another provider. Do not say anything about cancelling or you will probably be cut off immediately.

In the meantime connect by ethernet cable, start the PC in Safe Mode with Networking and do a speed test here -
Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester

Do this this evening if possible, then again tomorrow morning. Report back with the speeds.

Thanks guys. He is currently being charged for the unlimited package which costs a ridiculous 17 pm (pic below) but still is on the connect pkg? I have tried and tried to get him switched over to the faster LLU (adsl2) but always get the same awnser "No places left" I will do as you say isitme and gret back to you. Big thanks

He is not on the Unlimited package, which is 7.50-15.00 a month depending on what other Sky products he has. The Connect package is the most expensive ADSL at 17.00pm, only Sky Fibre costs more..

Its really ridiculous being charged this amount for a service that does not work. Ps i have tried the safe mode with networking but cannot get online. Do i have to do a selective startup, if so which services ps?

most likely has malware if you cant connect through safe mode or wireless does not work in safe mode , run with ethernet connect also download copy of malwarebytes it should tell you if anything there

Re: Ridiculously Slow BB for 4yrs 0.06 download

With Sky Connect it appears that you have a daily limit of around 1.3GB. This works out to be 40GB per month.

If you go over this limit on too many days in a row, your connection is throttled to the stone age until you use your connection for less that 1.3GB per day for around a week.

The Friend of the OP is clearly on Sky Broadband Connect, as is seen clearly on the screen dump shown in post #6.

If the friend is not in an exchange with Sky's LLU kit then the most sensible thing is to change provider ASAP. As Tom said in Post #7, the person needs to get their MAC Code from Sky (do not cancel) and then needs to find a new provider.

The price for the Connect package is steep. Sky has to pay BTW rental money to use BTW's backhaul and BTW's staff/systems to manage the line. With the Sky LLU kit, Sky uses their own backhaul and staff to manage the systems. If you look around you will always find broadband services provided on LLU kit is cheaper than BTW's prices.

Take a look at SamKnows to see what is available: SamKnows - Telephone Exchange Search

As for Safe Mode - I trust that "Safe Mode with Networking" was chosen. If this isn't the case, then whether it is Malware or some other nasty is debatable. It is possible that some additional software, such as Intel ProSet Wireless software, is needed and was not running in Safe Mode.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
