Same line stats, 6Mbps slower sync... Help!!

      Hello all

I recently moved house and got Sky in the process. I just finished line testing on Sky Unlimited. Final setting according to the Sky website is 12.3 up, 1.3 down.

I must admit I find that quite disappointing.
I have 26.5db Line attenuation and noise margin of approx 8db down, 8db up (I'm currently at work, can't check exactly).

The flat I lived in (same area, same distance to the exchange) synced at 18+ Mb down with Be*. And that was on fastpath (Annex A) with a ping of 8ms to Speedtest.net using a Netgear dgnd3300 router!!

I cannot believe that these sync speeds are the highest I can get on this connection!?
The line test steadily increased speed the first few days and then basically stuck itself there. Quite disappointing!

What's my best plan of action from here?
Anything I can try from home? Would I gain anything from trying to use the Netgear router?

      Many thanks in advance!

PS: here are the stats as per last night:

      12024 kbps 1105 kbps
      26.5 dB 8.6 dB
      8.3 dB 8.2 dB

Give Sky a friendly call to see if someone can manually adjust your line speed.

There could be a few reasons that you haven't got the same connection speed, the most obvious is that Be uses a much lower noise margin that Sky, the other being that I don't think Sky use Fast Path.

      Thanks for your answer Scubbie!

Might just give them a call indeed... but how much do you expect I'd get out of this? Without tweaking snr I surely can't expect it to be 6Mbps faster...
Isn't fastpath actually slowing down the connection in favour of a better ping? That would be equal to Sky's "gaming profile" I suppose?
Any way I can reduce the noise margin my end? I had it much lower with Be*... but I'm hearing Sky won't go lower than 7 or 8?

Fast Path is a little different to Sky's gaming profiles.

Sky used to set the Noise Margin to 7dB but recently DLM was changed and only it can set the Noise Margin lower.

Since yours is at 8dB on both sides, there is some room for improvement IMHO. I was initially concerned about the potential for a noisy line, but since you previously had a much faster connection, I am guessing that the line should be of good quality. However it would be nice to see that actual stats which you had previously as there are some other factors which could have an influence.

Hmmm, strangely enough I just got home and can see my downstream noise margin is now 4.2db...

Does that suggest there's a lot of noise on my line?

It does suggest that something is unstable. Perhaps it would be worth going back to basics?

Could I ask first that you disconnect everything from any telephone sockets, then plug a corded telephone into the Master Socket, dial '1' and listen carefully for any noise. Ideally could you use the Test Socket, behind the split faceplate of an NTE5 socket if you have one.

Sky User - How to test your Master Socket

Next could you plug in just the Microfilter, short ADSL lead and Sky router and post your connection stats.

Also could you describe how you normally connect the router, telephone, etc. to your line.

Well that's the thing... there is not really a master socket. The previous owners have pulled so many cables and extensions that I've effectively been unable to find the primary socket. I decided to plug the router into the socket that had the highest snr at the time...

I know what flats can be like.

If you remove the faceplate you should be able to see a capacitor (blue or yellow) behind it. This will identify the Master Socket.

Right... this gotta be the one (and the one I was plugged into):

How does that look (apart from a bad quality pic taken by my crapberry)?

Also, I logged my snr over the last few hours, nothing dramatic. I think the disconnection might have had something to do with me unscrewing the faceplate to take the pic I suppose. You can see Sky re-connected with a higher margin afterwards:

Re: Same line stats, 6Mbps slower sync... Help!!

      That IS the master socket.

There are a couple of things which you could consider doing if you are interested.

You could replace the socket with an NTE5 socket, with a filtered faceplate at the same time. This would isolate what looks like two internal extensions and should help to raise your potential connection speed (a friendly call to Sky will be required to to this once you've change the socket).

The other is to remove the Ring Wire from the Master socket and any extension. In most cases this isn't required, but with some phones, mostly the older ones, it is. See the kitz link below for more info on this.

::. Kitz - Improve your adsl connection speed .::

Take a look at the run-IT-direct website for prices and details of the NTE5 Socket & filtered faceplates. whilst the most expensive, the vDSL faceplate appears to be providing the best connection speed for an ADSL connection. Dave at run-It-direct does contribute some good advice to the forum and their prices are very good. Typically you'll get the goods the next working day too.
