Well, I'm gonna go for that vDSL faceplate. It's not like it's gonna cost me a lot of money, and it looks like it's actually "fibre-ready", in case I decide to switch later on.

Once I've installed it, I'll give Sky a ring, let them know I've replaced the socket and ask them to do a manual line fine-tuning.

Many thanks for all your advice, Scubbie, very helpful and very much appreciated!

      No problem.

Just in case you have misunderstood though, you will need both the NTE5 socket and the vDSL faceplate.

That's cool, I've got one lying around I can probably use. Otherwise I'll just pop over to Maplins!

      Operation successful!
      Socket+faceplate replaced!

Time to call sky to get a manual line tuning done, methinks!

Ok, so I called the friendly lady at Sky... She arranged for her manager to do some line tuning.

According to her, the line should've been able to handle 18Mbps... but after checking, she said it was apparently generating too many errors so they settled at 16.3Mbps. Here are my new line stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16381 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 dB 14.7 dB
Noise Margin 7.0 dB 16.8 dB

Note the loss of upload speed, and the sky high upload noise margin. What on earth have they done?

Some people do tend to forget the upload speed when manually changing the connection figures. Give them another friendly call and see if you can get someone else who can do a better job.

As for the errors, might I suggest that you double check all the wiring before you call Sky to see if you can improve things at your end first.

Guess i'll have to call them again indeed...

Well, wiringwise, my router is plugged into the master faceplate/socket using a high quality shielded phone cable so there's not much i can improve on that end.

One thing that did surprise me a bit when i did the rewiring of the socket though: there were TWO sets of wires connected to the socket, so I just connected both sets to A and B, just like they were on the old socket. Think this might have something to do with the errors? Why are there two sets of wires in the first place?

No problem. I would suggest resolving any wiring issue first though.

Any chance you could post a photo first please? Perhaps someone can tell from than.

Really? You must use an ADSL cable , like the one Sky provided with the router.

The two sets of wires would be the incoming line and the other set your extensions. You should have the incoming only connected to the A-B terminals and the other pair to the 2 and 5 terminals on the filtered faceplate. If you have both sets connected to the A-B terminals on the inner plate, then your extensions are not filtered. You should fix this asap.
