      Strange speed issues today

When I got home from work this afternoon, I did the usual web surfing etc and noticed straight away that web pages are very laggy. Did a few speed tests and I was getting speeds <1Mb down. I normally have a very stable connection with speeds ~18.5Mb (which can go months without disconnecting or needing to be rebooted)

I'm synced at 22Mb down and 1Mb up with my Sky broadband Unlimited.

After wasting about 2 hours on and off today talking to Sky, which really is an uphill battle in itself, firstly I got cut off after been on hold for 30mins whilst the agent was talking to tier 2 and no he wouldn't put me though to tier 2 even after asking several times. Called back 90 mins later.....only to find agent 1 (who cut me off) also hadn't bothered to write any notes on my account so I had to start from scratch with the new agent, who again would not put me though to tier 2....tried blaming everything from me using Macs instead of PCs, me using Time Capsule instead of the Sky router Wifi, me having too many devices connected to router at same time (even though I did a test with nothing connected other than a wired connection to my Macbook)

Tried switching over to my old Netgear router (I'd grabbed my Sky username and password before they bumped me onto MER). Whilst the download speed is not upto the full 18.5Mb, it's up to about 6mb. With Sky router I'm getting <1Mb even after numerous reboots. I also cannot get rib of the very sticky Sky IP address.

After changing the MTU to 1500 and rebooting, the Netgear router is now giving download speeds ~16.5Mb which I'm quite happy with.

A couple of things I've noticed since these issues this afternoon (using the Sky router)

      1) The second hop on a trace route is one I've never seen before with my Sky broadband

      1 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 0.698 ms 0.357 ms 0.378 ms
      2 5acc027e.bb.sky.com (90.204.2.126) 30.503 ms 21.241 ms 31.603 ms
      3 10.245.190.17 (10.245.190.17) 22.488 ms 23.101 ms *
      4 89.200.131.185 (89.200.131.185) 39.815 ms 29.876 ms 32.090 ms
      5 212.58.238.189 (212.58.238.189) 45.579 ms 29.126 ms 28.610 ms

      2) Before today, I've also never had an IP starting with 90, they have always been starting with a 2.

On doing a IP address geo location lookup, it's saying it's coming from a town some 10 miles away?

Is that normal? Normal my IP tells me I'm in Earby (which is where I live) as I'm connected to the Earby exchange (LCEAR)

      my Sky Router Stats:

Sky router speedtest (my usual one in my signature)

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 20579 kbps 1098 kbps
      Line Attenuation 11.0db 7.2db
      Noise Margin 7.1db 9.4db

      Netgear DG834N Router stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19690 kbps 1150 kbps
Line Attenuation 12.0 db 3.0 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 9.0 db

Sky are also completely flummoxed as to how I've managed to get a non-Sky router working on a MER connection. All I did was enter my Sky username and password!!!

Just fed all this back to Sky about the router issue and asked for a new router and they said no, unless I pay 35!!!!

Already tried a full reset and makes no difference. It really does look like it's my Sky router that is at fault.

      Re: Strange speed issues today

That's interesting so at least it's not just me then. Something definitely changed/ happened on Friday afternoon. Have you reported it to Sky? (though good luck with that!!!)

Maybe it's not my router then (although I'm still getting solid 16.5Mb with the Netgear router).

Could this possibly a MER issue or something like that? Are you connected using MER or PPPoA as PPPoA seems to be OK.

I'm in Burnley, and have been experiencing really slow browsing over the last couple of days. Not too bad this morning though.

      Re: Strange speed issues today

I've solved this issue by using a non-Sky router. If possible try using a different router (you will need to extract your Sky username and password from your Sky router though which I'm not sure is still possible)?

I'd extracted my details from my D-Link Sky router before Sky put me on MER last year.

      Re: Strange speed issues today

I'm located in Thornton in Craven, near Earby. I lost internet, solid amber light overnight on Thurs. Came back on overnoght on Friday, went off on Saturday afternoon. Came back on overnight this morning. Speed is slow about 1Mbps, instead of 7Mbps.

See that I am MER network type.

Dont know wjat thos means or whether this is the problem.

      Re: Strange speed issues today

There's definitely an issue in the Earby area with routers connected using MER. Please report it to Sky (if you have a Sky Talk package, calls to Sky are free) as the more people that report this, the quicker it will likely get fixed, although nothing will happen now until next week by the time Sky pass this onto BTo. I called on Friday and it's finally now been escalated to CST yesterday (that was a job and a half getting that far). Also mention to Sky that you are aware of other users in your area having issues.

      Re: Strange speed issues today

Connecting using PPPoA is routing a different way than with MER:

      1 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 0.746 ms 0.487 ms 0.415 ms
      2 dr3.hobir.isp.sky.com (89.200.128.40) 23.820 ms 22.948 ms 22.204 ms
      3 vl193.ar8.hobir.isp.sky.com (89.200.132.102) 22.992 ms 23.221 ms 22.839 ms
      4 212.58.238.189 (212.58.238.189) 26.473 ms 26.460 ms 25.718 ms

So my guess is the issue is with the second hop (the exchange?)
