      Syncing Too High?

      Hi,

A long time since I've been on here, I had to sign up again with a new username as couldn't remember my old details.

I've had my Sky Broadband unlimited for nearly 5 years now, and since overcoming initial teething problems with noise by installing shielded internal phone cabling, I've been just fine for ages.

Just this last week or so, my line has been syncing higher than before, it used to synch at about 15,000-16,000 kbps, and my Noise ratio would sit at a happy 6.9-7.1 for days on end. Just Recently it has been Syncing at just over 17,000 causing (I presume) my Noise Ratio to drop to around 5.5, and since then the connection has been very unstable. Stats below:
      System Up Time 00:26:10
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 15485 14588 0 2949 5421 00:24:32
      LAN 10M/100M 673 0 0 97 0 00:26:06
      WLAN 54M 17150 20513 0 5720 3155 00:25:59
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17023 kbps 986 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 14.4 db
Noise Margin 5.6 db 7.5 db

It doesn't seem to right itself when I reboot the router, it just syncs to the same number.

Hoping that the wise and learned on here might be able to shed some light, as as far as I'm aware nothing has changed at my end. I was happy with the 15,000 I was getting when it was stable.

      Thanks and Help Appreciated

      Paul214

Could be that DLM has ran on your line and set your SNR target to 6db.
Some changes has been made to DLM so lines can be set to 3db 6db and 7db.
It might have re-trained your line and thats why your syncing higher with lower SNR.
If you want the SNR slightly higher you will have to phone sky but it could mess it up so your speed was slower than it previously was and upload speed could end up less.

      Looks like you're on non-svbn?

As above, DLM has recently been revamped to profile with lower SNRs if it sees applicable. If it has led to instability, then call up Sky and get them to cap the downstream at 16384kbps and/or change the downstream target SNR back to 7dB.

Thanks for your response, as you say I may have to contact SKY. And from reading other forums on recent DLM, I'm not alone with this.

Yes you are right, I'm non-svbn I still have my BT Landline with original number. I'm curious how you could tell that was the case?

What are the repercussions of being non-svbn?

      Thanks,

      Paul214

      Re: Syncing Too High?

Just guess work to be honest when you mentioned you had a phase 1 netgear from 06/07, PPPoA connection and the under 1mbps upstream.

No repercussions at all. In fact, it's better in that Sky can profile the line completely manually rather than by set profiles. I'd personally ask them to set the downstream SNR back to 7dB and cap the downstream at 16384kbps. See how that fares, but I'd say it'd be stable.

      Re: Syncing Too High?

Ive just started having the exact same issues with my broadband.

      My Stats :-

      System Up Time 17:42:46
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 845543 1522756 0 622 34865 17:42:08
      LAN 10M/100M 61405 0 0 121 0 17:42:42
      WLAN 11M/54M 1590568 949178 0 35291 963 17:42:35

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16383 kbps 939 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 19.9 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 8.0 db

I was connecting at about 15k with noise about 8db. Now they have upped the connection speed my noise has plummeted. Not sure what to do as I don't want to go lower than 15k....Shouldn't they tell us as customers before doing things like this just in case

      Re: Syncing Too High?

You have some pretty damn good stats, router hasn't dropped sync in over 17hrs either.

What's the actual issue that you're having?
