Unhappy Loss of Speed in Last Week

Hi, new to this, please help!

Over the last week I have noticed that my sky internet unlimited connection over both wireless and ethernet is absolutely terrible. I tried to watch the interactive Damian Hirst thing on Ch4 website when I first noticed it, as it would not buffer, played for a bit, then just froze.

I have been a customer of sky broadband for just under a year, and always experienced good speeds till now. Two weeks ago the internet connection and phone (again with sky) stopped working, but that was a problem across our area and they worked at the exchange to fix it.

Bizarrely I have noticed this slow to nothing internet speed, since they replaced the telegraph poles to the back of us, which we would be connected via.

I have run a download speed test and it is a paltry 0.76, used to be over 6mbs! Even loading a webpage takes forever, and as for downloading, forget it, it reminds me of the days I had orange where it would take 2.4 weeks to download an album! Internet also drops off as well, something it never used to do.

I keep seeing BT men working on the comms boxes up and down the roads near us, could this be the cause, them fiddling? As I say, until they replaced the telegraph poles everything was A okay, but this could just be a coincidence.

      Thanks a for your help.

It maybe easier for people to help if you can post your current router stats

Re: Loss of Speed in Last Week

You are getting far less than what you should be doing

      ADSL2+ Speed Test

We estimate your line is capable of between 5mb to 6mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

How are you connected to the internet, are you using the master socket or an extension and then plugging the router into that?

If possible repeat the above from the test socket.

Re: Loss of Speed in Last Week

I am using a master socket, with a sky provided filter on it, as I say it is only in the last week i've noticed that at times we cannot even use the internet it is that slow. I have moved the router to another socket (not a master one) within the house, and run the speed test, and it is all the same. The usual speed is up to 6mb.

I use a wireless connection on my laptops, but this PC is always ethernet connected and usually cause of that has fast speeds, but not at the current time.

Re: Loss of Speed in Last Week

Are you using the front of the socket or the test socket?

If using the test socket and the stats are the same, then there is an external problem to you. In that case then you need to ring Sky.

Have you got another filter that you can swap out instead of the one you are currently using?

There maybe an issue with that one.

Actually give this a try to see if there is an issue with your exchange?

Re: Loss of Speed in Last Week

I have just tried another filter and ran a further speed test, although it is slightly up to 0.87, from 0.77, it is still way under normal speed. I am beginning to think all the BT vans I have been seeing and engineers at comms boxes in surrounding roads, is what the issue is, as like you I believe it is possibly external. I will ring sky and see if they can answer whether this is the cause. Thank you for your help.

Re: Loss of Speed in Last Week

I think you may have a line fault where one of the 2 cables is broken. Voice can still work OK but broadband is severely affected.

That scenario could tie in with the recent activity in your area.
