Broadband/phone war trauma! Please help...I'm begging!

Hi all, Id be very grateful for any assistance you guys can offer.

I have sky's max broadband package and Sagem2504 fast router. The router is plugged into the only phone socket in the house, which comes directly through the wall. There's no test socket. There's a microfilter plugged into the socket (I've tried 3 different ones).

Basically, my cordless phone and the router appear to hate each other. I get crazy static noise on the phone from the router. The router gradually loses connection when you are on the phone.

Ive tried changing the wireless channel to every single option. It has o effect. I've tried separating the base station and the router by a couple of metres, no improvement.

The phone is terrible, the broadband is crawling. Can anyone tell me which device is at fault and what to do about it?

Any/all help will be most welcome!

      Thanks

      Paul

Post up the stats with everything plugged in / turned on as normal - How to get your router statistics - Sky User - The unofficial support forum for everything Sky!.

Then, turn off the power to the phone's base unit. Post up the stats again once you've done that for a comparison.

Correct me if I am wrong but if you switch off the router the noise dissapears?

If yes then I had the same problem.

The problem was the power pack for the router, it was on the way out and the elctrical charge was "leaking" or interfering with the phone line.

Can you find a multi-purpose AC/DC plug to plug into the router and test this?

Aye it does. But it's a brand new router. I will see if I can get one and give that a shot. Will try to get the router info requested by the other guys in the meantime

Blimey you guys are rapid! Thanks

Not exactly the biggest difference between the two and it's often difficult to pinpoint REIN.

However, how often would the broadband take to drop sync usually? Can you monitor it with the base unit unplugged completely for the meantime and see if it stays stable?

Have you seen it since I edited it? I waited a bit longer before copying the stats and there's quite a bit more variation second time around there.

The broadband doesnt always drop sync, it depends on how long the call goes for. The speed drops for sure, the connection drops depending on how much noise builds up on the call. The amount of noise heard builds gradually during the call, causing (what seems like) a proportionate drop in speed. I just happened to be stood by the router when I tried a call earlier and saw the connection drop.

Edit: Yeah I will unplug the phone base unit and see what its like.

Further info, it was the phone noise that really alerted us to the problem. The broadband speed has gradually tailed off since we got the new broadband in, so we initially put this down to testing the stability and then they changed our exchange over to sky cabling, so I thought it may be down to that. That process completed over a week ago now though so it should have settled down a bit. You literally cant hear the person on the other end of the phone by the end of a call, the crackle builds up that much.

Ah, I've just seen the edited stats.

Although you have a high SNR in the first stats and usually would suggest a power cycle would get you up to speed, it more than likely suggests high error rates whilst the phone base unit is on. It's a bit difficult to judge with the lack of detailed stats on the Sky router's these days. However, the second set of stats look spot on.

Looks as if it possibly is the base unit, most likely the power supply unit feeding to it. May be best getting hold of, say, a corded phone and then plug that in with the router. See if that sorts out the noise on the line as well. If it does, then look at replacing the faulty PSU/base unit.
