MER or PPPoA - whats it all about?

my friend on this forum (thomasjc1) has SKY BB Unlimited, he said he was on MER on his D-Link but decided to use PPPoA on his Netgear GT as he didnt like the way the IP address was 'sticky' (mine on o2 LLu was like that and I had too spoof a different mac address if i wanted to change the IP address as they seemed to lock IP's to MAC's)

Anyway, Iam on MER and will also be using a Netgear GT after DLM has finished (which according to My Sky -> My Broadband is not active) does this mean I will have to use PPPoA..?

can anyone explain the differences? - im not sure why but I thought MER was on SVBN , and PPPoA was on EasyNet - is this right? but on SVBN you can use either?

      thanks in advance

Re: MER or PPPoA - whats it all about?

MER uses a different connection process to PPPoA. Some connections still do not support MER, mine does. However, using my own router I have to use PPPoA as we haven't completely cracked MER.

There are a few who have made excellent progress though with some router. If you look at the technical section you can read up about it.

what are the benefits of struggling to stay on MER...?

i was under the impression that PPPoA was better, I may be wrong, just off what some have said...preferring PPPoA over MER

I guess the race to get 3rd party routers to work with MER is merely incase SKY pull the plug on PPPoA and were all stuck with Sagemcoms ..and stuck on 7db SNR lol

there is no real performance increase on MER compared to PPPoA is there?

I think MER has a bit more protocol overhead than PPPoA, so if anything they'll be a very slight drop in data throughput. I gather MER with DHCP authentication is favoured by a few US isps.

If Sky's MER implementation isn't fully cracked yet, then the new sky firmware on the DG934G has a new option to log the IPOE connection, which might reveal some more information.

Re: MER or PPPoA - whats it all about?

We now know exactly how it works (the ppp username and password just get passed to the DHCP server using a 'DHCP Option'), the problem is getting other routers to replicate it. There has been success with some routers, but it usually requires messing around with the command line.

A member of this forum noticed netgear had released GPL source code (with binary) of a firmware update for the dg934g last year, but as far as I know it has not been rolled out by Sky, maybe there's some issue with it, or else they're waiting until the dg834GTs have all been updated. I had a look at the code, and they'd added support for IPoE, to support MER connections. Currently there's no point in installing it as the router will auto-downgrade to the current version, although it would be quite easy to rebuild the new firmware with the old version number, which should prevent it downgrading.

Oddly, netgear don't appear to have released the source for the new sky dg834GT firmware.
