Angry New sky broadband is slow and pings are high

Hello, my sky broadband went live today and so far it is much slower than my previous connection with aol/talktalk (same thing).

Pings with aol were around 40-50ms but pings with sky are much higher at 160ms+. speeds are also slower and constantly go up and down, not stable. MySky shows that DLM has not started on my line yet.

      Current stats from
F@ST2504n (BTW this things web control panel is very slow compared to my old netgear).
      Firmware Version 5.23.1a4N

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3574 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 dB 35.0 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 15.9 dB

With aol/talktalk yesterday my sync was similar but stable. Yet with sky when I download test files from thinkbroadband, the speeds are very unstable and start off at 80kb/s then slowly goes upto around 270kb/s but fluctuates. Also my line attenuation was 53dB with talktalk.

None of this happened on aol/talktalk. I am very frustrated by this.

I am connected directly to the test socket and have no extension cables being used, sure my line sucks anyway but at-least it was stable with aol/talktalk.

Any ideas on what the hell is going on?

53db because it used G.DMT not ADSL2+ and the speed starts off slow because of the wbsite server or because you have a bad wireless signal could be many things but most probably nothing to do with sky.

160ms+ im not sure about that

      command prompt > type > ping 90.207.238.97

I think youll find the results are acceptable.

I am using Ethernet directly plugged into the router, actually. Only I am using it and I can see the access LED's on the front of the router. Like I said, it worked fine on talktalk. Everything at my end is fine. Could sky be congested at my exchange?

Re: New sky broadband is slow and pings are high

I keep reading these posts about high pings and it's mostly Sky users. If you go to any other ISP forum you don't see this level of complaints over pings

The sheer level of complaints about high pings and poor speeds on the official forum would put me off getting Sky Max. The sheer level of complaints, the sheer intensity of complaints over pings and speeds, that can't be good for Sky

Re: New sky broadband is slow and pings are high

You see the complaints but you don't see those who are VERY happy with the service - which are in a VAST majority

As for the OP - regardless of whether it worked with TalkTalk you're now with Sky so take the opportunity to rule things out your end. Connect to the TEST socket and then see what's going on. Also, ping a UK server when comparing pings - using an overseas one doesn't take into account things outside the Sky network

Re: New sky broadband is slow and pings are high

One thing I'd mention, which is the same for o2, is they use lower SNRs than Sky which would account for higher sync speeds. It could then be differences in exchange gear/peerings which could factor in connection differences

Ultimately, Sky can't do a lot as you're getting about the right speed for the line

I was on sky for a few years and i got the maximum speed that could be achieved down the line, the speed isn't sky's fault, you only achieve slow speed because your line condition is poor or long, i achieved maximum throughput 24/7 for the few years i was on sky. As for the pings sky are not supposed to use fastpath so the pings arnet as low as some ISP's but are acceptable around 26 - 30ms instead of 14ms, and doesn't really affect gaming or browsing.
