      Sky set their default to provide stability rather than out and out speed. Every line is different, you have already mentioned that your noise margin drops considerably, if you line was set to 2-3 db, it would drop out continually. If it were staying stable at around 7db, you could then maybe drop the noise margin a bit, but as it is not al l you will do is harm your connection.

      BT have a minimum target noise margin of 6dB, so the BT service probably connected with a 6dB margin and the margin has drifted down. BT's monitoring system can increase the target margin as high as 15dB if it detects errors.

      On my own line, I see a variation of over 3dB across the day.

      Also different routers (different chipsets and firmware) estimate attenuation and margin differently.

      Thanks to Mel's fantastic router addon, I'm able to set the training margin and it connects at 2100 down and 544 up. This is a solid connection and reports between 5.5-6.5 dB noise margin. The only time it drops is when Sky do something DLM'y.

      Two questions then;
      1. How do I improve my upload speed? The router reports a max of 960 but it never connects higher than 544.
      2. Is there a way of getting Sky to reset the target noise margin so I can actually connect at this speed without having to use the router addon?

      After 9 months of 1Mb speeds, regular dropouts, idiotic call centre staff insisting nothing was wrong, wasted time on the phone doing diagnostics and lost time off work waiting for Openreach - we now have a decent connection. BT came out and did *something* to the line and the attenuation has gone from 64.5dB to 48dB and the connection speed is currently sat at a stable 4Mb.

      Nice result, even if it did take a long time.

      Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
      Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
