Your individual telephone line will support a different speed to someone a few hundred metres from your home.

The physical wiring makes a difference with ADSL, even more so with ADSL2+.

As you have moved from BT to Sky's equipment, your physical connection was changed, if only at the telephone exchange.

ISPs will not share the information between each other. So had you gone to o2 or TalkTalk, the same would be true.

So basically, everyone has to put you on the starting speed and work from there.

It is automated as it would take a lot of man hours to personally alter all new customers lines.
Nope just one quick call and being polite is all it took

Just one other question, my stats are above showing 16mb down, but when i run a speed test I only get 12mb and when i download I only see a speed of 1300kb/s maximum. Is this because of the peak period? I was told they never limit the speeds. Will this increase after peak hours?

Actually it is forbidden for Sky employees to cancel the initial training period. By doing what has been done to your line, someone has placed their job on the line and they could be dismissed or face disciplinary measures if they are caught.

The upload speed could have been higher. Currently it is quite low, perhaps someone else may comment on this?

As for what you are seeing, there is a difference in translation. The speed quoted on the router is kilobits per second. If you look at the download speed you are quoting, you will probably notice that the speed has a capital B, indicating kilobytes per second.

If you are connecting wirelessly, there will also be some speed loss too.

There is also a small amount lost in overheads.

Click the button above entitled "Speed Test" and take a look at that.

      Re: Slow speeds

Thanks Scubbie. I also thought the upload speed would be more as friends can upload at around 80-100 kb/s constantly.

Also the guy told me he went to his manager with my details for him to boost my connection. Dunno if that matters or not..

      Re: Slow speeds

It doesn't. The whole point of DLM is to HAVE SOME PATIENCE!! What if your line now starts to suffer from instability issues? You'll be right back onto Sky crying about it...

That agent is still likely to be at risk of reprimand so in future just wait like everyone else does

      Re: Slow speeds

Although this forum is independent of Sky, we do have several members who also happen to work for Sky or have worked for Sky.

We don't wish to put any Sky employee under unnecessary pressure, which is why we don't recommend chasing them to get your line speeds changed before the initial DLM period has completed. Many will check things, notice that DLM hasn't started and then decline to change your connection.

Someone else may read this thread at a later date and think that they will copy you, hence why IWNTE and myself have pointed out the consequences. We don't wish to cause either yourself or any Sky Employee a problem.

My suggestion now is to wait at least 5 days to see if DLM still kicks in. If it does, your connection speed may well change, but it will also re-sync your connection between 1am and 6am (typically around 2-3am). If this happens, then allow the process to complete. Check the "WAN Uptime" to see this.

If DLM doesn't kick in, then call Sky again to see if the upload speed can be improved too.

He said the DLM will still work and I will get a better connection than this, it will just take up to 10 days to find the best connection...

      Re: Slow speeds

From observations on this forum, I would doubt that. Unfortunately DLM tends to bring a connection speed down a little if it starts high.

Ultimately keep any eye on things. When DLM has completed (check you 'My Sky' page on the Sky website) post your stats in this thread and we can take things from there.

Looks like you should change your thread heading from 'Slow speeds' to 'Very fast speeds compared to BT'
