Awful Internet speed (312kbps) Sky Unlimited

      Hi,
I'm new to the forum, I've got a problem with my internet connection being extremely slow. I say 'my' Internet connection it's my parents' home and I'm back for Christmas, I use Be Broadband at my home (and love it).

They are currently paying for Sky Unlimited. Using the speed test they are getting speeds of "current download speed is 312Kbps, and your current upload speed is 496Kbps".......I know I know absolutely atrocious! Especially as they are paying for the top service.

      The details are as follows:
      Router: Netgear DG834G
Distance to exchange: Roughly 1 mile (CV4 to CV36PD Finham Exchange, SamKnows)

Does anyone have any advice? (apart from move closer to an exchange). It's extremely frustrating I feel like I'm using a dial up connection.

I use a Billion 7800n router at home, do you think my parents investing in one would make a difference? I'm looking for something that will make a big impact and not just an increase of for example 0.5mb.

Thanks very much for any help.

First things first, could you post their connection stats please?

How to get your router statistics

Can you also ensure that this is completed from the Master Socket, or Test Socket if available.

Sky User - How to test your Master Socket

If you are using the Test Socket, please can you double check that every extension is dead.

Whilst checking that things are not working, identify the telephone lead from any Sky STB which they have. Often the Sky engineer will plug this lead into a socket BEFORE the microfilter. This is wrong. The telephone lead to the Sky STB MUST go through the microfilter, just like any telephone or fax machine.

If you are a mile from the exchange, even doubling that for actual line length, should put you in the 8-10Mb range. The service is up to 20mb, the actual speed depends on the length and condition of the line.
Do as Scubbie suggests and post your stats and we will try to help.

Just had exactly this problem. Broadband has worked fine for 12 months, but started dropping connections over the past few weeks. Today it became unbearable, dropping continuously, and a speed check showed less than 1Mb, where we have previously been getting 7Mb +/-.

I knew the STB splitter was fitted before the micro filter but, as all had worked fine for a year, and it had been fitted like that by a Sky Engineer, I didn't think it could be an issue..... But it was!!

Called Sky, described symptoms, and was led to the splitter, which I moved to after the micro filter - Bingo!,

How on earth can the engineers make this mistake, which is obviously a regular error...... And why did it take a year before it became an issue on our system?

Anyway, during the diagnosis, the expert at the call centre said that it looked like our line could handle a faster speed, so she upped it from 11Mb to 14Mb. Good result all round!! Speed checker now shows around 9Mb, which is better than we have had before.

Well worth checking that each socket, particular the master, has a micro filter before anything else.

      Cheers,

      Richard

You wouldn't believe how common it is for splitters to be incorrectly fitted by Sky tv engineers. I'm surprised when I hear the splitter has been connected correctly, that's how bad it is. Sometimes stats will give a splitter set-up issue away - line will show a high SNR typically in the teens, despite syncing in low with high error counts.

I believe that it is so bad that other ISPs hate Sky's Satellite services because of it.

People on this forum will be familiar with this issue, but I suspect that people on other forums will not be so ready to look at the cause.
