Keep being given strange IP Addresses

      Hi all

Just come across a strange issue with my WAN IP. Originally is started 94.xxx.xxx.xxx my connection dropped and now it seems to give me an address of 2.xxx.xxx.xxx. I have never had a WAn IP starting with 2. One thing i have noticed is that on the status screen it shows my subnet as 255.255.255.255 i thought it was normally 255.255.255.0. when i look under the ethernet LAN setting on my billion router it shows the subnet as 255.255.255.0 so dont now if its just a bug maybe.

Sky have just reconfigured my line and i seem to have a normal 94.xxx.xxx.xxx IP again but the subnet is still showing 255.255.255.255 its seems to be called the netmask on the billion status page. I have checked again under the ethernet LAN page and it shows the subnet as 255.255.255.0 so it must be some kind of bug. Just ran ip config as well and that was showing the normal 255.255.255.0

Anyway any ideas on the strange IP starting 2.xxx i recieved?

Thanks again and sorry if i sound confusing

Re: Keep being given strange IP Addresses

Glad im not the only one just seems strange that when the re-profile my line i get a normal 94.xxx. I think my line profile was set to high and the line couldn't cope as it just kept trying to reconnect after the drop out it was constantly connecting then instantly dropping again. Mind you in saying that though my connection on the profile i was using at the time had been up for 15 days the longest i have ever had i have had it dropped from 4.7mb to 4mb to see how it goes

Re: Keep being given strange IP Addresses

Each ISP purchases blocks of IP Address numbers to use. Sky used to only have ones that started with 90 & 94.

The US Military sold off some of their IP Address blocks and Sky bought some. These start with 2.

There is nothing wrong with having either. It is an issue with some Internet services though as they do not recognise the new IP addresses as belonging to the UK and you may have issues. Most have now been addressed.

I am not certain but I think this subnet is used with the SVBN WAN. It has nothing to do with the LAN subnet.
