      Internet drops form mobile phone.

I'm not sure if this problem is a phone problem or a router problem but occasionally despite all my other WiFi items in the house all being able to access the internet every now and then despite my mobile phone showing a good strong WiFi signal I get no connection. To resolve the matter I have to unplug the router and restart it. Would getting a better router solve this problem?

      Thanks.

Instead of the router automatically assigning an IP, create a static IP in the connection settings on the mobile phone.

      192.168.0.44 - IP
      255.255.255.0 - SUBNET MASK
      192.168.0.1 - GATEWAY
      208.67.222.222 - DNS PRIMARY
      208.67.220.220 - DNS SECONDARY

      It might help.

      Thanks

Yes, but be aware that this can cause problems if you want to connect to another network, friends, hotspot or workplace for example.

Have you tried restarting your phone instead of the router?

Occassionaly restarting the phone sorts the problem out however restarting the router tends to do a better job.

As I only use the WiFi function of the phone at home (to save eating into my data usage) it wouldn't really prove a problem connecting to other WiFi networks.

Can I ask where the above numbers came from? Also if I want to revert back to a dynamic IP situation is that possible in other words can I flick back and forth between the two situations using the above numbers for the Static IP situation?

      Thanks again.

These are what you need to in put on your phone by using manual set up. They are suitable provided you have left the DHCP settings in your router at default.

I am not sure whether you would be able to switch back and forward between manual and auto on your phone. These settings may be deleted when you select Auto, so would require inputting again.

Re: Internet drops form mobile phone.

I thought I'd share a quick update. Before changing the IP settings I rang SKY Broadband helpline and they suggested using Channel 6 rather than Channel 11 on my router which did. The results were amazing the internet on my phone performed amazingly well, HOWEVER, the rest of my WiFi items such as my Galaxy Tab wouldn't play YouTube videos and if they played on my Mac or PC they played then stopped to buffer. Likewise for the laptops.

What I don't understand is why the big difference? What would be nice is a channel where both the phone and the Computer/Tablets worked equally well, does anyone know a channel that does this?

      Thanks

All the WiFi channels should work equally well. What can affect them though is if there is another router nearby which is using the same or an overlapping channel. With this in mind, could I suggest that you download and install inSSIDer on a laptop?

It will show you which channels are being used locally and which is the cleanest.

Out of interest, I have a friend whom was having a similar problem today on his BT HomeHub with a new Samsung mobile. Which make/model is yours, in case there is an issue with the range?

I can't get to have a go at fixing his until later this week, so I'll be watching what happens with yours a little more closely.

Re: Internet drops form mobile phone.

      It's a Samsung Galaxy S2.

If I understand you correctly what I need to do is check out the local situation with respect to who's using what channels (using the software you've suggested) and find the one that is being used the least?

Are all the channels better than others or do they all perform equally well and it's just a case of using one that isn't being used by too many people?

      Thanks

Re: Internet drops form mobile phone.

All channels are equal, but if one nearby is in use it will interfere with those around it.
Channel 13 is often a good bet as it is not often used. It is overlapped by the least amount of channels, the same as 1, but which is often used.
