Anyone know of any problems in Nottingham NG9 area?

Phoneline's JUST gone to hell in a handbasket and gone utterly utterly crackly, with the result that picking up the phone boots the internet... of course the crackly phoneline makes phoning customer services in case it's just an area fault a bit tricky, and trying to track down help online when the net keeps bombing out is a somewhat interesting experience.

Since it's happened in the last couple of hours and the thing's been chugging along quite happily for the last 12 months before that I'm thinking there's some kind of local fault but no way of knowing!

I would first suggest that you check another handset, then plug into the Test Socket if you can.

If you can still hear a lot of noise, then try calling your line provider as they are responsible for your line between the exchange and your home.

Definitely not a problem at our end - changed microfilters, unplugged everything, done the test socket thing... so now we're faced with having to call them - but have no working phoneline as it's got 100 times worse overnight to do so... and not exactly having the cash to waste the much mooted 20-30 on mobile phonecalls that people say it's cost them online.

Oh and they don't answer email enquiries!

I assume that you are with Sky Talk for your telephone line & rental. This being the case, give Sky a friendly call and explain that as you land line is not working you are calling on your mobile. If you ask them they can call you back on the mobile phone straight away.

Unplug everything you have connected to the phone line and plug in the phone only. Try dialling one digit, is the noise still there?

Re: Anyone know of any problems in Nottingham NG9 area?

Got through to customer services and they rang back on the mobile (having tried the landline and given up as the noise was so bad!) - second line tech did some jiggling giving us a vaguely useable line yesterday, and Openreach just came round this morning (can't fault that - my mother's just had to wait 3 weeks to get her phoneline fixed up north by 'em!) - the wiring connectors at the telegraph pole was all corroded to high heaven which he's swapped out - seems to have cleared the noise and found us an extra meg or so on internet speed (wasn't complaining about it normally since we chugged along quite happily at about 13meg but more speed's always a good thing - cracking along closer to the 15 meg mark now)

Have to admit - more painless than getting a fault repaired by the opposition has been in the past!

      Nice result.

If you would like to post your router's stats, there may be room for improvement which another call to Sky could fix.

How to get your router statistics

Make sure that you are using the Master Socket (or test socket if you have one) in order to get the best from your connection.
