      Broadband speed extremely low

      Hi,

      I have used Sky Broadband 20mb for over 2 years now. My speed has been very slow compared to what the other people get.

      My maximum speed when I download a file is only around 500-600kb per second.

      Is it normal Sky users get that much speed? I have heard friends say they get atleast 1mb per second.

      I am considering in switching to Virgin fibre optic if this issue remains.

      Thanks

      There are many reasons why a connection can be slow compared to others nearby.

      As a first step, could you post your router's stats please?

      How to get your router statistics

      Next could you plug your router in the Test socket with the short grey ADSL lead that Sky supplied and a microfilter, with nothing else attached.

      Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
      Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: Broadband speed extremely low

      Not wanting to hijack the thread but having the same issue as the OP. I connected an iPlate on Tuesday but no improvement to the speed, currently only hitting about 100kbps on a line that says should be hitting around 900kbps (I live in the sticks and miles from the nearest exchange!) Hoping the iPlate kicks in soon and helps out.

      Apologies for adding my stats but if some kind soul is willing to help I would be extremely grateful;

      ADSL Link...............Downstream....Upstream
      Connection Speed....1023 kbps.......606 kbps
      Line Attenuation............63.5db...........39.2db
      Noise Margin..................8.7db.............1.2db

      EDIT - Just noticed it says connected to Coventry server on the above speed test. I live in Merseyside.

      100KB/sec is correct for your connection speed, you need to be sure you're not confusing your bytes and bits

      Apologies, I seem to be getting the wrong end of the stick. The speedtest is reading 0.9 mp/s and I'm getting more like 0.1 mp/s.

      Re: Broadband speed extremely low

      You are getting 0.91Mb/s in your speed test. This equates to an actual throughput of about 0.108MB/s. Note the capital 'B' which denotes Bytes and the lower case 'b' which denotes bits. ie, with a connection speed of 0.91 Megabits per second you are able to transfer data at a rate of 0.108 Megabytes per second.
      bits = speed
      Bytes = data.
