      DownStream speed slashed

      Hi,

      My mam has been complaining that the internet has been slow lately, and upon checking the router, I see her downsteam has dropped to 493 rather than the usual 2.5 Mbps.

      These are the current router stats...

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 493 kbps 798 kbps
      Line Attenuation 57.5 db 35.1 db
      Noise Margin 23.6 db 12.6 db

      Checked her landline, and the audio quality seems terrible. She thinks it's fine though, and has always been like that.

      Unplug the phone and see what happens. Chances are the phone line fault has caused DLM to cap the line. Definitely something not right there

      Your noise margin shows the line has been capped, maybe by DLM finding a problem. Phone Sky and ask them to reconfigure your line for its best speed. After they do this keep checking the speed and if it drops again, you will have to look into why the speed is reducing.

      I'd just reboot first and see if it goes up, might be a temporary noise issue resolved with unplugging everything else bar the router. Saves a phone call

      OK, thanks all. I'll try these suggestions this weekend, and give Sky a call of nothing works.

      Speed has returned to normal!

      Unplugging the lines and powering off the router did the trick.
