Will it go a little faster

DLM has just finished, here are the stats:

      Connection Speed: 6083 796
      Line Attenuation: 47.5 28.5
      Noise Margin: 7.5 13.7
      Conection Time: 180 hrs

From day 3 of DLM my speed has been: 5238 down 675 up.

I was with TalkTalk before moving to Sky and I could download at 6mbs before my speed slowed to 4mbs, hence the move. I am connected to a filtered faceplate via ethernet.

Do you think it possible to get the 6gbs I have seen on this line or should I accept the 5.25. (it is very stable)

The faceplate is many years old, I had it fitted when I changed from ISDN to broadband when broadband first became available. I have disconnected my Sky HD box and have only one phone.

You may get a little more if you called Sky. You should be aware that not everyone has access to the systems which allow them to change the connection settings, so you may need to make a few calls to find someone who can do this.

Once it has been completed, post the revised stats so we can check that they are fine. Often the upload speed gets forgotten.

I would expect a small improvement, nothing too high. Sky uses a target Noise Margin of 7dB and you are fairly close to this already.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

If you have a Test socket, and I would think you would if you have an old V1 socket, remove the faceplate and plug in one of the Sky filters. Take your stats and post them. There is a chance that your faceplate has become a bit weary.

Other ISPs use a lower default noise margin than Sky, which may account for a bit of the speed you have lost. Sky prefer their lines to be stable, rather than a fast as they can go.

Re: Will it go a little faster

No difference really, you could try calling Sky and asking them if they can up your speed any. I doubt if they will manage much, only a few kbs.

I used to be with TT and they use a 10dB target SNR. Any difference in speed between TT and Sky could be down to the locations of the respective companies equipment within the exchange or even the DSLAMs or ISANs used.

This 5.25 speed is very stable and consistent, I think I'll stick with it, rather than risk unstabillity.

Re: Will it go a little faster

Just spoken to a very nice Scottish lady for nearly one hour by phone and mobile and she has upped my speed to over 6 meg down. Here are my latest stats:

      Connection Speed: 7163\412
      Line Attenuation: 47.0\28
      Noise: 7.1\18.2

I'm at the start of another 10 day traing period and my first speedtest shows: 6101\345.

My upload speed has halved, but I'm not bothered about that. I had to remove the filtered faceplate and try two different filters in the test socket. (one was a lot better than the other) I have the faceplate stuck to the wall with gaffer tape and the fillter hanging out which is not a problem as it is hidden behind a filing cabinet.

Well worth the call to Sky.

The upload speed is almost as important as the download. Don't forget that every time you press a link to get a download or even go to a different page, you are using upload, it is not just used when you upload to Youtube or something like that. Having a poor upload can actually slow down your download speed, as each packet has to be acknowledged.
As things stand you have a good upstream margin, which would allow a fair bit more speed. If DLM has actually been started on your line, the increase will come automatically, if after a few days there is no improvement, call Sky and ask them to increase it manually.

Re: Will it go a little faster

I understand. Thanks for that Isitme.

Got in from work this morning to be informed by my wife that 'the phone doesn't work'. I had the faceplate hanging off the wall so that the modem could be inserted in the test socket. The phone would not work in any other socket. screwing the faceplate back on solved the problem, but of course the modem is no longer in the test socket.

      Latest stats:

      Connection Speed: 6760\412
      Line Attenuation: 47.5\28.6
      Noise:: 7.5\18.1

      Speedtest: 5810\345
