      Major Connection Issues

      Hi all.

These past 3-4 days i've been practically unable to access my internet in the evenings. I've done speedtests each time and got between 0.08 and 0.12 mb/s which is rediculous.

I've rang sky and they give me the usual peak times stupidity (which i understand but its never been this bad and even at peak time 0.08 is not even close to normal) and then ask me to do the usual reset router etc none of which has helped.

Also, not sure if it's related but for some reason my network name changed tonight from what i called it (kingsworth) to sky and then a bunch of numbers, and it asked me to re-enter the password and stuff when i went on it (nb: my connection issues have been going on a few days before this happened)

Any ideas/hints/solutions will be warmly welcomed, i can provide extra details on request.

      Thankyou so much

      Re: Major Connection Issues

Firstly your profile indicates that you have Sky Broadband Unlimited. Sky BB Unlimited is never throttled. I suspect that you actually have Sky BB Connect.

Could you post your router's stats please so that we can confirm either way which you have?

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps

      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: Major Connection Issues

I can't. My parents have a package with tv and phone. It's never been this bad before and we've had it for years. Is there nothing i can do?

      Re: Major Connection Issues

As Dave has correctly stated, you are indeed on Sky Broadband Connect.

It is possibly the worse service available and you have gone over the daily limit of 1.3GB too many times, which is which you now find your speed throttled like it is.

(Unofficial) FAQ - Sky Connect Users

The simple answer is to collect some information, research a new ISP, get your MAC code and move.

The is only one speed test which will be accepted for the purposes of supporting your case that the package is unsuitable for your needs, this is BT's Official Speed Test: Test Result

As for changing ISP, check SamKnows to see if there are any who have their equipment in your local telephone exchange as they will often be in a position to offer you with the best package in your local area: SamKnows - Telephone Exchange Search

Take a look a thinkbroadband's list of ISPs and see who is around: thinkbroadband :: Broadband deals from UK broadband providers

Then search for any forums to see who can offer you the best package and to see who has a good or bad Customer Service background.

Recently TalkTalk came bottom for Customer Service. PlusNet, which is owned by BT, appears to be one of the best for those who have no LLU providers.

As for when Sky is likely to upgrade your telephone exchange, assuming it has not already happened, this information is kept very quiet and is only available after the event.

      Re: Major Connection Issues

You need to determine whats available at your exchange.
Check Samknows, link in Scubbies post, and let us know for recommendations.
O2 in my experience has been fine and I'm a pc gamer.
Whatever you change to may be a bit of a chore as your parents have line rental with Sky, this is something I wouldnt recommend to anyone. Not just with Sky, none of the companies that offer packages including line rental make it clear that its more difficult to change ISP in the future.
Something that should be made more clear at sign up imho.
